Re: [Chevelle-list] Garage in the basement

2006-10-26 Thread 66chevelless396

Trooper,

It works out real well. Because it is attached to my garage1/3 of my basement is taxed at a garage rate.I wantedfloor drains in this portion, but the building dept would not approve it unless I installed a triple basin systemwith pump that would run around 3K back in 1990 - wasn't worth it to me for that and park what I am driving in winter time in the 1st and 2nd stall of the garage that does have a drain for washing cars and wet stuff. I thought abouta lift instead of a ramp, but it was extra cost and would still need a concrete floor under it. My ramp slopes 5' over a 27' length so its gradual enough to still parka car, lawn mower, bikes on which I do each day. From the outside it looks like a regular 3 car attached garage. The concept is simple, but still blows people away the first time they see it. I stole the idea from my dad who has the same setup with 3 cars at all time in a portion of his b
asement attached to a 4 car garage.

Here's another interesting take on car storage. A guy in my dad's Nash club lives inFlorida, has like 10 Nash's. He ended up buying a run down house in his neighborhood. Took out all the non-load bearing walls and since it was all on a slab onlyneeded a small ramp (2 steps) from the garage to the house level. He now parks all his cars in there and maintains the look of a regular house on the outside.

Krister,
How do you like that setup with the basement. I have a friend her in southern Illinois that has the same setup. He collects old Indy cars and has room for about 4 in his basement. I always wanted to build a house with the basement under the house and garage and use a 4 post lift to raise and lower the cars thus not wasting a lot of space on a ramp. This may not even be feasible it's just an idea I had. You could drop all your fun cars into the basement then raise the lift and park your driver right over the hole.

I put a "BatteryMinder" on the battery, slide soup cans over the exhaust pipes (steel wool stuffed in the end works too) to keep unexpected mice out. Mouse proof! and everyone has opinions on what works best. I remove any source of food/water and set a few traps. Cover car if it is in a dusty environment. Crack windows 1/2 inch for circulation. Holley carb bowls tend to evaporate out and can then hang open a float (been there done that) so I run the engine to full temp once or twice during winter, but then comes the condensation issue in the exhaustuahst system - you can't win.

My winter Chevelle storage is actually in my basement - taking about 1/3 up, connected by a ramp (concrete floor)that is the 3rd stall in the attached garage. The incline is very gradually so I can still park other vehicles on the ramp. A garage door at the bottom of the ramp closes this basement portion off from the garage. Quite unique, heated and right by all the tools. Put this in when I built the house - building dept only required a 6" gas curb from the rest of the basement and 5/8 Firecode drywall (which should be used everywhere in my opinion). If I was better organized I could get 3 cars down there. Some people call it the "Bat Cave".
