Re: [Chevelle-list] NEED HELP WITH TILT COLUMN!
I just recently sorted out my '68 tilt column (floor shift) w/walnut wheel. Maybe I can help. If you want to contact me off line I'll give you my phone number. Hello,Recently I decided I wanted a tilt wheel column for my1968 Chevelle. Now the problem is they're really hard tofind in good shape and so I bought one from Gary's Steer-ing Column Restoration in Koon Kreek, TX for $419. totalshipped and everything all rebuilt, even came with cancelcam and a new tilt lever. Now the bad part was the wires were all backwards on thecolumn's harness so every one of the wires had to be re-moved and reattached to their rightful electrical ends. Then everything was working good and I bolted on a GrantSteering Wheel I had sitting around. That because the '68Walnut Steering Wheel I had bought on eBay! and I washaving restored at (another "Gary's") Gary's SteeringWheel Restoration in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The Grant fitright on the new column and I waited, and still drove myChevelle around. Easy waiting that way!Just yesterday the Origional Walnut Steering Wheel arrivesbut then it doesn't fit. Apparently the origional wood wheelhub for this steering wheel is correct<---No chance it can'tbe! This hub and subsequent hubs I looked at all being the sameand recessed 3/8's of an inch under the edge and flat across.I looked at a few pictures I had on file of '68 tilt column I sawbeing sold on e-Bay! and this looks identical, but none of mypictures shows the locking plate on the end of the columnshaft. Then I call Gary's (The one in Texas!) and I explain the lockingplate (the thing-a-ma-bob with the three holes in it) is stickingan inch and a half out of the bell housing of the steering columnand the bottom of the steering wheel hub is only recessed aquarter inch = No-can-put-together-scenario, and so I said,"Whatsupwithat!!?"Guy says he needs a picture but doesn't have anybody therewith internet. Then I ask him "Can locking plate be taken offthe shaft by a puller?"He then says that he wasn't aware '68's had a locking plate.I tell him this was sent by his company and was very explicitlystated that it's a completely rebuilt 1968 tilt column for Chevelle. That doesn't surprise me but still I tell him that this appears tobe a 1968 floor shifted GM steering column in all ways exceptthe locking plate. Can anybody tell me, "Can I just take this off?" Or do I have togo and remove and reship this entire column back to Gary's?Can anyone tell me? HELP! --J.G. Warburton '68 Chevelle SS CVT A.C.E.S. # 6448
Re: [Chevelle-list] NEED HELP WITH TILT COLUMN!
Funny I didn't think 68 (I know it didn't) had key in column. 68 ignition was on the dash. Larry (Z)
Re: [Chevelle-list] NEED HELP WITH TILT COLUMN!
You will also find that the ignition switch (electrical mounted on the column) is different than on a standard column. It's a '68--the ignition switch is in the dash, not on the column. BL
Re: [Chevelle-list] NEED HELP WITH TILT COLUMN!
I can't help at all with the wheel mounting, but have noticed that there are adapter kits available in the restoration catalogs that I have. I wouldn't think that you need one, buttt...stranger things happen. I do know that the wires are suppose to be backwards on the tilt column as compared to standard. All you needed to do was rotate the connector. If the wiring is causing you doubts about the heritage of the column don't let it bother you. I know absolutely nothing about steering columns so this will probably be useless and make no sense… Does it look like this? (big picture) http://www.crazyrusty.com/chevelle/projects/electrical/full/steeringwheel.JPG That looks like the part your talking about that is sticking out… If it is, there is a small piece that goes on it to cover it up, which I could take a picture of, if not then nevermind J - JB From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, August 19, 2004 2:10 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Chevelle-list] NEED HELP WITH TILT COLUMN!
