Wayne you are correct. Stronger is not the perfect word to describe the new
cars. They are better at transferring impact energies around the passenger
compartment. Rather then allowing the impact forces to bang up the occupants,
the frame rails crush and absorb some energy then the extremely strong
passenger cage transfers the remaining energy around the passengers. Pure
strength does come into play on the sides, the rockers, pillars and doors,
since the vehicle manufacturers have about 6-8 inches at most to stop a
incoming impact.

09 and most modern designed cars are not "Stronger" but there engineered to be
energy absorbing in the uni-shell construction. The Shock absorbing crush
paneled design in the 09 is obvious in the film. STRONGER Solid is not always

I have to agree with Tom. The front structure in that 09 Malibu is
incredibly strong, just like in just about every 09 sedan now made.

shows what metals are in the front. As for the airbag timing, the computer in
a modern car can detect a collision event in 1-3 milliseconds. The airbags are
deployed in 3-5 milliseconds after that. The above average human reaction time
is 7 hundreds or a second. (.0001 for the computer and .07 for the human {
http://www.visualexpert.com/Resources/reactiontime.html }). If you look close
at that video or any other with a modern airbag deployment, you see that the
occupants head is actually deflected away from the steering wheel, to the left
side in this case. Yes, he probably would have soft tissue damage (whiplash)
but he will walk away.
I work in a collision shop and every day I hear people say things like Kevin
did here. But they do not realize that they are still alive after that wreck
because the new car they drive is so incredibly strong. Most wrecks people
have today would have killed someone if they happened in a "old" car. Just my
2 cents.

If the driver of the 59 had no seat belt maybe he would have died. If you look through the passenger side window the dash board is intact and the 09 pivots on the corner of the driver side firewall. The whipping action of the 09 swinging around and striking the driver's door looks bad but remember how big that front seat is and how much distance there is between the steering column and the door. I drove a tow truck for a few years and walked through many a junk yard. I say the rules have changed but it looks even to me. Reading through all the replies I am convinced that today's cars are light years better engineered from a safety standpoint than my "69'. Thinking back on this, I would have friends alive today if airbags and mandatory seat belt laws would have been around in the late 60's and early 70's when I was young and dumb. You know I take great pride in the fact that at 25 years old I was a ASE Master Tech in repair/refinish/estimating. I also have a industry certification by I-CAR of Platinum Individual. I am certified for a variety of Hybrid models as well. What those things mean is that I spend hours and hours each year attending classes, seminars and other industry gatherings to make sure I have a noggin full of knowledge. That allows me to look a a car and estimate what it will take to fix it, blueprint the repair process from start to finish, stand my ground about correct and complete repairs...I can repair dents, replace any panel on a car, replace urethane set glass, sand mud, spray primer, color and clear coats. Shall I go on? I guess this was a really long winded way of saying I have done research, I am in the thick of collision repair every day. Totals are up for reasons you apparently do not comprehend. The cost of airbags, the recession, availability of good serviceable LKQ parts, the high cost of new OE parts (that is a whole 'nuther debate on its own)...all have a bearing on if a car is totaled. If a car is in demand for LKQ parts, then many insurance companies will total that type of car sooner then others just because salvage values are high on that model. I think we can look at that video in this light: If a old car had to die, what better way then in a way that a person does not die with it? It was a grand example of how far vehicle technology has come since the 50s and I for one am happy for that advancement. Are cars now perfect? No. But the cars are safer now and that is all we can ask for is it not? Wayne you are correct. Stronger is not the perfect word to describe the new
cars. They are better at transferring impact energies around the passenger
compartment. Rather then allowing the impact forces to bang up the occupants,
the frame rails crush and absorb some energy then the extremely strong
passenger cage transfers the remaining energy around the passengers. Pure
strength does come into play on the sides, the rockers, pillars and doors,
since the vehicle manufacturers have about 6-8 inches at most to stop a
incoming impact.

I believe Larry's point was that a 1959 Chevrolet was sacrificed to make the video, just like Hollywood does from time to time. Granted it probably was not fine restored vehicle, but never the less something someone could have used and saved. We argue all day about frames and steel gauge's, but the fact is an '09 is certainly going to fair better in a crash like this. It has 50 more years of design and technology. It would be like in 1959 taking a '59 and running it into a 1909 - what do you think might happen. It wasn't until until 1966 were seat belts made mandatory in US vehicles and didn't appear as a law to wear them until the mid '80s for most states. Maine and South Dakota made in law in 1995. much stronger metal than the 59 Impala is. Not to mention the 2009 car is much
more structurally sound than the 59 as well as the fact that the metal in the
59 has had 50 years to begin deteriorating. News cars are designed so the
