RE: [Chevelle-list] Replacement sheetmetal Who makes it ???

2004-10-07 Thread John Nasta
Keep in mind that because of tax & tariff laws it often behooves a company
to work under a different name in a different country. A perfect example is
that DII's Canadian company is called Golden Leaf Associates. Same people,
same product, different name.

The bottom line is that DII does own their own stamping facility in Taiwan,
and even when some of the other companies claim to "make their own" what it
boils down to is that they paid for the dyes and DII is stamping it for
them. It gets very convoluted.

I purchased a right 69 full rear quarter from DII (Dynacorn) the last week
of August. Haven't installed it yet but I also have an original right GM 69
rear quarter that I compared it to and the Dynacorn quarter looks like a
very good reproduction.
There is no way Goodmark is stamping their own 69 full rears. They in no
way could justify the price of the machining (dyes, etc.) with Dynacorn's
quarter already in production.
My guess is that Dynacorn is stamping them for Goodmark. That's why
Dynacorn was first on the market with them. They wanted to fill the market
with their product before they released them to Goodmark.
My understanding from a very good source that has been a distributor for
both Dynacorn and Goodmark for many years is that a large number of
Sheetmetal replacements are manufactured by Legion in Taiwan and then sold
to the above mentioned companies. So neither company is really producing a
number of the sheetmetal parts for our cars.

I should correct that by saying that
most
of the large panels they offer come from DII. Goodmark also sells lots of patch
panels and DII doesn't make any if those.

Bad
news is that one of the manufacturers of patch panels seems to have gone out of
business. The company came under new ownership earlier this year and lately
their fax machine doesn't pick up and their telephone message says that the
mailbox is full and can’t take any more messages.
Bummer.

It's a common misconception that Goodmark makes everything they sell, but

While we're talking about repo and sheet metal
You can ignore Year One's sheet metal rating. I bought a full qtr
panel that was a "#1" and "NOS" from them, and it was a POS.It was
so thin, it actually ripped! Fortunately, my body man was able to
salvage it, and fix/hide all the problems.
