I have the Monte Carlo pump on my 72.  Feel & response
are just about right for a driver.    But, the box does
slightly limit the turning radius.  Its more annoying than a real
problem . Jim Shea @ Chevelle tech recommends a
box from a 93 - 98 (or so) Jeep Grand Cherokee for a daily driver
veicle .   The road feel is good and the turning radius more
closely matches the original - 72 anyway.   BTW - Jim
is  a retired GM suspension engineer and he has several web pages
devoted to steering stuff.   Do a search over there for
detailed info.On 7/16/06, [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Impala SS will have a 12.7:1 ratio as well. I'm rebuilding one now, soI can't say of the effect, but the general consensus seems to be thatit's the best ratio! You could upgrade to a metric pump at the same
time, ie, if you're in the wrecking yard. You'll also want to upgrade your power steering pump for greater flowand pressure at the same time. This involved swapping a fitting for onewith a larger orifice, a shorter spring to adjust minimum pressure, and
shortening the flow valve.  This page shows a comparison of a few pumpsand their interiors, and has part numbers for the ugrades.http://jeffd.50megs.com/Pump_valve_mod_page.htm
I pulled the pump from the cop car, and the fitting and valve need noimprovement. Just the spring is different. I also pulled a pump from a90s truck, and it was the same - just needed the spring. Take a fluid

Hiya,

A box from a 92-96 Caprice cop car (look for option 9C1) or 94-96
Impala SS will have a 12.7:1 ratio as well. I'm rebuilding one now, so
I can't say of the effect, but the general consensus seems to be that
it's the best ratio! You could upgrade to a metric pump at the same
time, ie, if you're in the wrecking yard.

You'll also want to upgrade your power steering pump for greater flow
and pressure at the same time. This involved swapping a fitting for one

shortening the flow valve. This page shows a comparison of a few pumps
and their interiors, and has part numbers for the ugrades.

I pulled the pump from the cop car, and the fitting and valve need no
improvement. Just the spring is different. I also pulled a pump from a
90s truck, and it was the same - just needed the spring. Take a fluid
wrench and 1" socket to the yard and see what you can assemble from

Hope this helps,

Most likely,it's a 17:1 ratio power steering box. A 12.7 should be just
right.

I had a 12.7:1 in my 67 SS from AGR and really liked it. Couldn't
'one-finger' it as it was a bit stiffer than whatever stock was but it was
solid, firm, and quick. http://www.powersteering.com/products/ can rebuild
yours for the same 12.7:1 ratio for $249.

What ratio are you using now?
I went from 21:1 to 17:1 in my 64 and it just made me want more!
So now I have a 12.7:1 box sitting in my "hope chest" for when I get my 4 dr

Hi, I'm back on the list after a long absence.  Have read the
archives on a regular basis.

I have a 71 Malibu
4 door.  Been working on for several years, it is now drivable
on a regular basis.  This is occasional driver, no track time but
occasional green light action (I'm 63).

I am replacing the power steering pump and while I am at it, want
to replace the steering gearbox.  The power steering gearbox is available
in quick ratio - 3.5 Lock to Lock, and Super Fast 2.5 LTL.   I
have read the 2.5 is "twitchy".  Does anyone have any
experience or opinion on this?  Leaning toward the 3.5 as it has
now, but would appreciate more info.

Thanks, Denny
