I attached one end and put a fan belt around the other. Placed the hinge on the
floor and held it with my foot as I pulled the spring over the other tab.

Godspeed,

The is a tool for that but I would take the old hinge to a body shop and
have them install the springs.

Has anyone had experience with the installation of new hood springs? How do
you stretch them out safely.

Or does anyone know if you can straighten out an original hood support?

Great Idea. My ex always thought I had every car tool ever made. I'll have to
check this one out! I have a nice holiday weekend and I thought I'd install the
gas tank. Seems I lost the little extension wire that connects the gas gauge to
the harness. Oh well:(

One more tip if all else fails, see your local Chevy dealer and order the hood
spring installer tool. Not making this up, it is listed in the assembly manual.

Re: [Chevelle-list] hood springs

2008-07-05 Thread ted laidig
When I replaced my hinges a year ago on my 69 I made up a tool to put the
springs back on with.   It is a T-handle affair out of 1/4 inch square stock
with a handle welded on one end and a couple of links of 3/8 chain welded on
the other.  I did the bit with spreading the spring with the floor jack and
putting nails in between the coils.  The less distance you have to pull to to
get the spring loop over the ears on the hinge the better off you are.  Put the
spring loop over the back ear of the hinge and hook the other end of the spring
to the chain loop on the tool.  Lean over the fender and pull forward and hook
it over the front ear of the hinge.  Repeat on opposite side.  If all goes well
the nails should drop out when your hinge is in place.  This may require more
than one person to assist you.  With mine I have a cowl-induction hood
aftermarket and it was plenty heavy.  One guy held the hood up and two of us
pulled on the spring with
the tool I described.  Hope this helps.  Good Luck !!

I just put one side on and used a prybar (VERY CAREFULLY!!) to stretch it
over the end. I wouldnt try to straighten an old one. depending on how its
bent. Check your hood too, maybe the understructure is crushed?

Hood is fine, but I bent the left hinge. It didn't want to move after 35 years.
I bought a replacement hinge and spring, but now I have to play with the
spring :( I was hoping for a trick or two.

Stretch the spring out someway, and put nails in between the individual
coils. Once you have the spring in place on the hinge, remove 1 nail at a
time.

To stretch the spring, use a floor jack. Hook one end of the spring to the rod
between the wheels on either side of the craddle and the other end of the
spring to the craddle and the pump the lever. This should stretch the spring
sufficiently to add the nails as Rick had mentioned.
