If it is a stock carb it may have one of those solid filters at the base.
Sorry if that info is too late. I haven't been following the thread.

We just ran into a car with the same problem. After much thoughtwe found
out the people had a too small filter online to the carb, starving out the
carb!. A trip to NAPA and all was fixed!!

I agree with those who said it's probably a fuel starvation problem. Start
with adjusting the float levels and see if that helps.

2005-06-29 Thread Matt Wettig

What kind of ignition system are
you running? I ask this because I had a similar problem with a car I had in the
past. I was running a 6AL6 box with a MSD distributor. When you would hit WOT
and the small block hit 4200rpm it would fall on its face. It was just like you
shut the key off. When you let off the gas it would take off again. Once it hit
4200 rpm it would do it again. It turns out that I didn't have a good enough
ground between the engine and frame. I bought a 1 inch wide stainless ground
strap and WHAAALLLA!
Problem solved. Not sure if this
applies in your case but it would sure be worth a try. My next questions would
be this. Are you running a stock fuel pump? Are you running the old original
fuel lines? Have you checked the filter? How old is the fuel line to the carb?
You could very well be running out of gas at WOT. Suggestions: Install a 3/8 SS
fuel line from the tank to the carb. Install either a HP mechanical fuel pump or
an electric fuel pump. Check fuel filter. Make sure you old fuel line is not
collapsing and install new fuel line to carb. Just my 2 cents.

well, another question about my engine. We just dropped in a
new 350 that should produce375 horse. We took the duel line holley
that was on the 283 and put it on the 350. first drip down the
road ,kind of getting on it,it seems to fall on its face about600
feet in to the run.when i let off it it seems to run great.do you
think i need more carb? I called Buddy Rice shop in OKC. Ok and he
thinks i need more. just wanted to get you guys input before i
  start changing stuff.

2005-06-28 Thread Dave Studly

A Holley/Edelbrock/Carter will equally be
your friend *if you know how to tune it
right.*  And that’s the key.  All brands have been
proven to work well on street-driven engines.  Run whatever carb you can
get the best help with.

If it is falling on its face after 600
feet, that sounds like a fuel delivery problem.  What kind of condition is
the fuel pump in?  Clogged/dirty fuel filter?  Double check the float
height as well.  This might sound silly, but how much gas is in the tank?
If your carb ran well on the 283, it should still run reasonably well on the
350, all else being equal.  It may be not be optimum, but it shouldn’t
fall on its face.

I agree that a bigger carb isn’t necessarily
better and that a 650 should be fine in terms of size.

Put a Q-jet on it, it will run
better.  A Q-jet can be your best friend if you know how to tune it
right.  The Holley might be running out of fuel when you are one it so you
may need to adjust the floats or even put some bigger jets in it.  The
most common thing I see as far as carbs go, is that people like to overcarb the
engine.  More HP does not mean you need an  850 CFM carb.  A 650
is plenty for a streetable small block.

I might be coming in late on this so forgive me if this has already
been asked and answered, but does the 350 have a new fuel pump and
what size are the fuel lines? Sounds to me like fuel starvation is
a possibility...
