RE: [Chevelle-List] Could it be a M22?
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List According to http://www.4speeds.com/muncie2.htm, the casting 3925660 is for 68-70 and 3925661 for 70-74 - all Muncie 4-speeds. Your 661 case (P1B26A) decodes to February (B), 26 and is the M20 ratio (A). Your 660 case (POC19A) decodes to March (C) 19 and is the M20 ratio (A). Interesting info on input shaft rings and spline counts as well. Re: [Chevelle-List] Could it be a M22?
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I think the output shaft of the M-22 is of the same as a turbo 400 shaft, I think? I remember reading that Grumpy Jenkins did not use these trannys for his big block camaro's because they could not be speed shifted that fast. The problem was the angle cut of the gears or something and the gear ratios were more for road racing then for drag racing. He wouldn't use the M-21 or M-20's because of the aluminum cases breaking at the ears all the time. Instead he would use cast iron T-10's. I think I also remember reading that he would shave every other tooth to engage the gears quicker! If that's crazy I don't know what is? : P I really don't think he would make more than a couple of passes out of each tranny if he really did do all this stuff. Paul rambling out load... P. Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Thanks Kent for that lead, the tranny number the person selling it gave me was a 3925661 / P1B26A. He is 100% positive that it's a M22 Rock crusher, because he says that it has a fine spline. The other tranny, the one from last night, it's a 3925660 / POC19A. He too is saying that it's a M22. But doesn't the A mean that it's a M20? Thanks for that link to http://www.interlog.com/~muncie/, very nice! - Original Message - From: "Graham Wooden" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Monday, November 26, 2001 8:54 PM Subject: [Chevelle-List] Could it be a M22? > > Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List > > > Folks, > > As you most of you know, I have been trying to nail down a transmission to > go behind a 383 in my 65 El Camino. > Well, I think I might have found one, but the seller is not sure what he > has. Re: [Chevelle-List] Could it be a M22?
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Since Muncie parts can be interchanged during a rebuild the numbers may not tell you which trans it is. The shaft rings may not either. The best way to see what you have is to open the case and count the teeth on the input shaft gear. M20 will have 24 teeth or less on some models M21 has 26 teeth on about a 45 deg angle M22 also has 26 teeth but will have almost straight cut teeth (about 20 deg. angle) - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: [Chevelle-List] Could it be a M22?
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I checked at http://www.interlog.com/~muncie/history.html and it seems all 68 and 69 M22's have a main case casting number of 3925660...could there be a zero at the end of that? The page says, "Muncie data shows 1968 and 1969 M22 received maincase #3925661. All documented M22 transmissions have the #3925660 maincase. It's unclear as to why this discrepancy exists."
