The first generation MCs used the short wheelbase frame similar to the 2dr
Chevelles.  I believe that it is the same from the front cross member back,
but the MCs had much longer rails ahead of the cross member.  Lots of front
overhang.

Are the frames for the 70-73 Monte Carlo the same as for the 68-72 A
body cars?

if yes, then why does it seem like the engine sits so much farther back
on a MC?

Can't answer that one, but something tells me no...it was longer

One reason is that the front end of the MC is longer than other 
A-bodies...(the same body style Grand Prix front end carried the longest 
hood ever made by GM).

I thought the Monte used the 4-door's/El Camino's chassis (ie- 4" longer
wheelbase)
