I have tall Moroso valve covers on my 71 with a 454 and a stock brake
booster. There isn't a lot of clearance, but enough.

What valve covers should I get for a 396 that will not be in the way of the
11" power booster?Ones that are no more than 2 1/2 to 3" high?

Les, Do you have vented covers? If not the crankcase pressure
can cause gaskets to leak. I use old style cork gaskets with a light coat
of weatherstrip between the gasket and valve cover. I put the weatherstrip on
lightly and install the gasket and valve cover with light bolt tension to allow
the sealant to set. Then tighten only as tight as it takes for a seal. I'm sure
the newer gasket material is better, but I can get a good seal with this method.

I always make mine out of clear silicone.  I put
a 3/16" bead and let it set up a while.  Then carefully install using a nut
driver.  I also install 1/4" studs to guide the valve covers so they don't
smear.  I never had a leak.  Wipe the excess off and your done.
Works for me with my stock covers everytime.

I don't know a part #, but Fel-Pro has a newer valve cover gasket that is
made like the new factory GM gaskets. It is steel wrapped in a rubber type
material. I have used them on small blocks and they are great. You can take
the valve cover off and reuse the gasket, they are so good. They cost more,
but are well worth it IMO.

Do what I didI located a pair of plain
valve covers, then I got a socket that fit the rocker nuts,,put ink around
the edge of that socket,,,I then cut 4 equal length 1/4-20 treaded rods,,then
thread them into your hds.,,go from rocker to rocker with socket,,while laying
the cover down over the socket,,effectively laying off location of each
rocker,,then use proper hole saw, and drill out each rocker location in
cover,,be sure you use proper bit, so that each hole is sized properly for the
factory rubber plugs used by G.M. in the big block covers,,presto!!! Chevy BIG block "Hemi" valve covers,,neat for adjusting you valves

Metal or aluminum? I've painted engine parts with
Krylon or other rattlecan paint and put them in the oven to cure for a few hours
at low temps (200 degrees or so). They still look good, years later.
If an engine gets hot enough to burn the paint
off,you are going to have bigger problems than that to worry about.

Well, they're beautiful but
won't work. That doesnt bother me much considering the price. The clearance
problem is with my power brake canister. I think the double gasket solution
might work. Another solution I found this afternoon are spacers. They are made
by Stef's and Flatlander Racing sells them for about $80 a set. They raise the
covers about 1 inch. Just perfect for my needs.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Valve Covers

I have the Holley M/T covers on both the 454 in my 70 and the 350 in my 86 Cutlass.  Much better seal.

I just
got an old set of M/T aluminum covers off Ebay for $50. I like the vintage look
it gives the engine compartment.

  Ok guys (and gals).  Steel
Valve Covers or Aluminum Valve Covers?  Not for any particular use (not
  for show or racing).

Aluminum.  Better seal and less prone to leaking
IMO.
