Re: [Chevelle-list] (no subject) Parade temp

2005-07-05 Thread Krister Meister

Drove our '66 SS 396 ( A/C ) in the local Parade again. Parade's seem to
test the cooling systems. I have a new stock water pump, new - recored 3
row Harrison and a seven blade fan. Water temp barley hit 220 after 20
minutes at crawling speed. Right afterwards I was able to drive through a
few 45mph zones and it cooled down to 200 in a couple of miles - just
needed some air.

What water temp do those of you with big blocks let it get to before
shutting it down?

Krister, I would seriously consider a pusher electric fan and run it
anytime you run your A/C. 220 is not awful but it is bordering on too
hot. A pusher should pull that temp down at least ten degrees which
would be good for your engine and make the A/C more efficient. Also try
not to ever shut down a hot engine as the temp will just climb. I
believe the boiling point for 50/50 coolant is around 240. There are
other factors. It sounds like your system is doing what it should for
what you have. That additional fan will make everything much happier.

For whatever reason, I also seem to remember that 240 is the magic number
that you don't want to hit.

Try less barley.

Since there's no chance of freeze damage,I would cut the antifreeze ratio
way back and run more water. Even better would be 100% distilled water with
a bottle or two of Redline WaterWetter. If your car isn't all original, chuck
the engine-driven fan and install a Lincoln Mark VIII electric fan set-up.
They practically fall on a Chevelle radiator and at 5,000cfm,will cool just
about anything.
