NAPA also carries it. It's called Triple Etch Metal Cleaner It under the
Automotive Specialty Martin Senour Paints brand. Part number 6877. It's a
spray on.

Diane, Ospho is but one brand of acidic rust converter. Basically phosphoric
acid. It treats and converts rust to iron oxide. Nothing works on rust as
good as sand blasting, but sand blasting turns big panels like hoods, trunk
lids, fenders etc. in to wavy junk. Media blasting removes the paint but not
the rust. So the next best way to deal with rust is to treat it, then sand
it, and seal it with etching primer before doing your body work, priming and
painting. Your paint store or parts store should have it. POR 15 has their

Re: [Chevelle-list] plastic media blasting

2003-08-15 Thread Matthew Post
Thanks for all the responses. Sounds like $2500 is way too much to pay for
stripping the car. I should look for another shop that can do it or look
into all the good ideas from everyone. Soda blasting sounds
interesting. I'll have to find out if someone does that in So Cal.

I really need to decide how to proceed with the car at this point. Whether
to totally strip the car down and take it off the frame or not. If I take
it off the frame, then dipping the body sounds like a good option. I want
to replace the body mounts and fully restore the chassis, but I was going
to try to do it without lifting the body totally off. What has everyone
else out there done?

Thank everyone,
Matt

Diane, Treat the surface rust with ospho and then sand back to bare metal.
Be sure to use etching primer on the bare metal to prevent new rust. It only
takes a dusting of etching primer, not a solid coat.

Hey Kim,

We were just talking about that at the shop today, what does one of those jewel's
cost and what brand did you buy? Hell I started cutting a car up and went and bought a plasma cutter, just as well go all the way and get a soda blaster huh? LOL Thanks for any help you could give me.

I just bought a soda blaster. It uses baking soda, I haven't had a chance to
get it going yet but the guy i bought it from said he got $500 to $700 for a
complete body, you don't have to take the glass or chrome off the car, he
said he would just open the doors, hang a blanket and then blow or vacuum
the dust when done. The residue is harmless.
I'm not sure about the blanket thing on my new interior but you might check
out the differences between this and plastic media.

2003-08-14 Thread Mike Holleman
Matt, I had my 65 El Camino media blasted. It cost me $600. Media blasting
does not remove rust. Be sure you get to see the car before the etching
primer is put on. Areas of rust need to be dealt with by one of several
methods. If it gets covered up and you are unaware of it, the rust will come
back to haunt you. $2500. is way too much for stripping a Chevelle.

 Matt;
Yes, I sandblasted my chevelle. I begged the man to "go light and
easy"
I've never noticed a ripple in the panels, but it hasn't been painted
yet. I am still cleaning sand out of it. I had it done for $150. of
course there was no front clip or engine in it then. personally media
blasting is supposed to be gentler on the car. But I really can't
complain; It came out okay. :-Diane

For that kind of money you can have it dipped and E-coated. That's the
option I'm looking at. All other options will not get all the sleeping rust.

Thanks for the responses guys. Sounds like it's the most expensive
option. Has anyone actually done it though? With chemical dipping, the
entire body would have to be disassembled and what about residual chemicals
in seams etc? I've heard you shouldn't sandblast a body cause of the
heat. The appeal of plastic media is that the body can be on the frame
with the windows still in etc. It's seems very expensive though.

Seems a great deal pricey to me. I had a chassis sandblasted the other day and powdercoated for 400.00 bucks, and I got a whole big block sand blasted for 40.00 dollars. 400.00-500.00 sounds a whole lot better to me. And if you really wanna get out cheaper like the guy said you can go and have it dipped or you can strip it yourself one saturday for much less. Just my opinion!

cost that much and it's probably the best method.
