There is a wiring diagram here: http://www.chevelles.com/techref/ftecref14.html
When you look at the picture that shows the back of the alternator, the yellow (white
on your car) goes to the #2 connection.

Do you have a meter? What are you reading across the battery with motor off?

What is it with motor running?

What are you reading from the red terminal; on the back of the alternator to ground?

Are you sure that you got the correct alternator? If you try running an internal
regulated alternator with the external regulator, you will have problems.

Sure hope we can all get you on the road soon.

Here is my problem. When I purchased my 69 Chevelle I had the 396 engine rebuilt.
I placed a one wire alternator on it. The alternator came with a large box of parts.
We the Alt. went bad. I thought I'd replace it with an original style one. The
wiring was still there. I did so yesterday. Hooked up the pigtail plug, red wire in
the rear and the negative battery cable to the Alt. Bracket. I took it to my motor
guy to check and see if I had everything connected correctly. I found that the
Alternator is not charging the battery. My problem is my engine guys say he doesn't
not much on the electrical side.
Can anyone give me some advise. Does anyone have a diagram as to how the wires
are connected (including voltage reg. etc.) Thanks guys and gals..
I'm been trying to get her on the road to enjoy her his summer. I'm now starting
to get discouraged.

You cannot put an internal regulated Alternator in a car that was wired
for an external regulated , that is why you are reading so many volts .
However ther is a kit to covert the wiring ,it takes 2mins to do . YEAR
ONE sells it part #HU30 goes for $13.95 .Call 1-800-932-7663

 Hey List,
Please help me.ask any questions you want and
I will answer them so that I can get this problem
solved..I know someone (a Chevy LOVER) can help a
 new Chevelle owner like me.

I just put a Delco Remy alternator listed for a
72 chevelle (internal regulator) in my 69 chevelle.
Does the year really matter? How will a difference in
amps output make? The problem is that while turned of
the voltage meter reads 12 volts.when the car is
running the meter reads 18 volts.way tooo
high. I have three wires leading up to the
alternator.a red one which goes from the
alternator to the relay and back to the battery.a
blue one which is the dash warning light (I
think...99% sure of that)...and a white one which was
not connected to anything (it was covered up by
electrical tape) when I bought the card almost 2 years
ago. I only found it after the alternator that was in
the car went died. What do you think is the problem?
Can anyone help me with the connections (i.e. which
wire connects to what)? HELP PLEASE I am going
 crazy here!

 Thanks in advance,
 T in SC

An externally-regulated alternator can be replaced with an
internally-regulated one at no extra cost; I did this on my '72
Blazer and didn't need to buy any sort of kit. I have the
directions around here somewhere and will pass them along if
I find them...

Sean,
The alternator that went bad after I bought the
car was already and internally regulated alternator.
That is why I don't have the brown and orange wires
leading to the alternator.

What happens if this is not fixed and the alternator remains on the car? Is
this the only thing that can cause a very high volts reading ? I have an
'83 Elky that has this exact condition, but it doesn't happen all the time.
When it does happen, the first thing you turn on (AC or heat) the reading
goes down to 13 or 14.

Yes you are right, but this way is easier for someone who does know to
much or understand the electrical schematics also no wires have to be
cut in case you want to change back.
