Re: [Chevelle-list] 70 SS GRILLE/and grill paint in general

2007-04-28 Thread Tom Tomlinson
I'm replacing the grille on my '71 Malibu. I have a replacement from
Year One which is a gray plastic, but I would like to paint it the
original silver color. I have the original grille to try and match the
paint , but I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get the correct
paint? It also has some areas blacked out, where the screw mounting
holes are.

Also, how should the grille surface be prepared for painting? Should it
be sanded with a fine sandpaper to scuff up the surface? Is there a
primer that should be used?

Thanks for you help.

Not quite true. The 67 300/300 Deluxe and Malibu did have the trim mounting
holes on the top bar but they also were different in as much as the last
egg-crate block next to the headlamps was filled (#3885980) where the SS
grille was open from headlamp to headlamp (#3892182). The Concours wagon
got a third grille (#3907432) that was open like the SS but had trim
mounting holes like the Malibu.

And the '67's had SS grilles that had partially blacked out areas although
the grill was identical (except for the badge holes) on the Malibu...

Since we are on the subject of grilles, I know that the 69 SS grilles were
 black matt,
but the end of those grilles were they black with the Silver outlines like
the Malibu or were those ends black also like the interior grille

They were all silver, SS grilles were painted before installed on SS cars.
I've had a few NOS 1970 grilles, all have been silver.

Did the SS grille for a 70 come new black or silver/gray from the factory? A
friend has a nos 70 grille that is silver/gray and he says you have to paint
it black, always been that way. Thats an awful lot of sanding edges and
 corners. Thanks, Les 70 396.
