Re: [Chevelle-list] hood springs
I attached one end and put a fan belt around the other. Placed the hinge on the floor and held it with my foot as I pulled the spring over the other tab. Re: [Chevelle-list] hood springs
When I replaced my hinges a year ago on my "69" I made up a tool to put the springs back on with. It is a T-handle affair out of 1/4 inch square stock with a handle welded on one end and a couple of links of 3/8 chain welded on the other. I did the bit with spreading the spring with the floor jack and putting nails in between the coils. The less distance you have to pull to to get the spring loop over the ears on the hinge the better off you are. Put the spring loop over the back ear of the hinge and hook the other end of the spring to the chain loop on the tool. Lean over the fender and pull forward and hook it over the front ear of the hinge. Repeat on opposite side. If all goes well the nails should drop out when your hinge is in place. This may require more than one person to assist you. With mine I have a cowl-induction hood aftermarket and it was plenty heavy. One guy held the hood up and two of us pulled on the spring with the tool I described. Hope this helps. Good Luck !! Re: [Chevelle-list] hood springs
To stretch the spring, use a floor jack. Hook one end of the spring to the rod between the wheels on either side of the craddle and the other end of the spring to the craddle and the pump the lever. This should stretch the spring sufficiently to add the nails as Rick had mentioned. Stretch the spring out someway, and put nails in between the individual coils. Once you have the spring in place on the hinge, remove 1 nail at a time. One more tip. Install the hinge on the car to hold it and then put the spring on. That way the hinge cant move on ya! I just put one side on and used a prybar (VERY CAREFULLY!!) to stretch it over the end. I wouldnt try to straighten an old one. depending on how its bent.
