I have you all beat. We lost power around noon on Thursday and just got it
back yesterday. Nothing like camping in your own house for 10 days.
We lost everything in the fridge and my friend down the street had power so
we put everything in his deep freezer.

I can't emphasize the
Importance of disconnecting the " Main Power Breaker"
with  the manual Gen
switch  set up

I have a Card attached to
my Back Feed  gen, cord.  and a quick B-4 you plug in list of
actions i.e  1st. Main breaker 200amp ,2nd all single and dual
breakers

To figure out your Load..
to your Generator is vary simple.
The Formulas is  P
=IE   where P = Power in watts. I = Current in amps
and E =
voltage..
example your water pump is
220v at 6 amp = 1320 watts

your refrig. is   110 v at 9 amps =  990
watts
your light lamp load is
simple there marked in watts
you now can figure out
your  Emergency back feed load plan for you Home.

  Donnie,
     It is a 5,000 watt generator. I have a 240 volt 50 amp
outlet in my garage for my air compressor. I turn off the main feed and all
breakers at the electric box so that there is no chance of power coming to the
house from the power company.  Then you plug a male to male cord from the
240 outlet of the generator to the 240  outlet in the garage. Then you
start the generator, go to your electric box and start turning on the breakers
that you want to use. I don't turn all of the breakers on but the ones that I
want to use the most. I turn on the water pump, refrigerator, range,
bathrooms, Big TV Screen (LOL) , computer and lights throughout the house. At
some point the generator will start to strain. You will know it is when the
motor starts to bog down. If this happens you have to much on in the house and
adjust what is on accordingly. If you would like to know more feel free to
  email me.

I have the same type set up. I put a 220v 3 blade 1/8 turn outlet in the
garage. Ran #10 wire to the panel. Made a #10 cord long enough to plug
into the 220v outlet and go to the driveway so the generator can sit
outside.

2003-09-23 Thread Harleyguy440

I'm fortunate enough that I also have a generator setup at home. Mine is on an automatic transfer switch so that when the power goes out, it fires automatically and powers the house. As soon as the power comes back in off the street, it shuts itself down and switches back over to line power. It runs on piped in natural gas (from the street) which is a slight disadvantage because it reduces the horsepower rating by 15% to 20% over gasoline. Also it's only a 4000 watt generator so it's putting out roughly 3200~3400 watts. It feeds all the essentials though-furnace, refrigerator, some of the lights, and the TV I was ready for Isabel but fortunately, she never showed up.

JIm,
I lost power Thursday night around 9 and did not get it back till Saturday night arounf 6 PM. I took the Generator out of the race car trailer and hook it up to my main box and powered the whole house. Let me know if you want to get a generator. I can hook you up.

Well,

After 26 hours in the dark, we got our power back last
nite around 8:30PM. We lost it at 6:30PM on Thursday
nite. Guess I'll be investing in a generator now,
since the power prevented our sump pump from working.
Thankfully, the '66 was warm and dry in the garage!
We're in Elkton, MD.
