I put this under the "building" category, but I have in fact installed the
program fully, to the best of my knowledge, using synaptic; it simply won't
start after installation.

[CinCVS] [Bug 445] New: Cinelerra won't start, citing "Illegal Instruction (core dumped)"

2007-08-29 Thread bugzilla-daemon
http://bugs.cinelerra.org/show_bug.cgi?id=445

Summary: Cinelerra won't start, citing "Illegal Instruction (core
dumped)"
 Product: Cinelerra
 Version: 2.1
 Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
 Severity: critical
 Priority: Medium
Component: Building
AssignedTo: cinelerra@skolelinux.no
ReportedBy:

When I start Cinelerra using alt+f2, all I get is a brief window flash, then
nothing.

Starting from the terminal, this is what I get:
:~$ cinelerra
Cinelerra 2.1CV (C) 2006 Heroine Virtual Ltd.
Compiled on Tue Apr 24 13:45:37 UTC 2007

Cinelerra is free software, covered by the GNU General Public License,
and you are welcome to change it and/or distribute copies of it under
certain conditions. There is absolutely no warranty for Cinelerra.
Illegal instruction (core dumped)
I installed using synaptic on Ubuntu 7.04.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open terminal
2. Type "cinelerra"

Actual Results:
:~$ cinelerra
Cinelerra 2.1CV (C) 2006 Heroine Virtual Ltd.
Compiled on Tue Apr 24 13:45:37 UTC 2007

Cinelerra is free software, covered by the GNU General Public License,
and you are welcome to change it and/or distribute copies of it under
certain conditions. There is absolutely no warranty for Cinelerra.
Illegal instruction (core dumped)

Expected Results:
The expected result would be for the program to actually open and work.

AMD processor (don't remember the model), no problems with other "complex"
programs like Ardour, so I doubt it's a lack of resources...

Pretty nice! The sound and music are really good!

That's also what I did.

Video format and quality remains also my biggest problem. For the
container, I choose .avi, I'm not so sure Theora is easy to read on any
platform, but I would prefer to use an open and free format for sure.

I likely wont do the subtitling, too much work... And David cannot read
yet (he's only 3).

Thanks.

As I already wrote, there is very little animation, but for the eyes and
mouth. When letters move, they just contract and extend a little. If you
read Povray, you can look at the source to see.

Once I was explained (on this list, thanks) how to take a sequence of
images to create an animation, using Cinelera was a pleasure.

Well, should I create a subtitled version ? ;)

The animation of the letters (that are just extruder character from a
font) is surprisingly acceptable despite its simplicity (just an
horizontal and vertical scaling applied on the letter); creating moving
creatures (with legs and such) would have took me a life to do ;)

If you want "cross-integration", you would need to port all the Cinelerra
features into blender.
