Your trouble smells like the (in)famous ALSA lockup.
If you are using ALSA as Audio Driver, make sure you have Stop playback
locks up checked in the Settings-Preferences-Playback-Audio Out
window.

Is this an option that anyone would ever want to have turned off?  I've
often wondered why it is an option at all.
