QuickTime H.264 is a good format for mac. Cinelerra can encode that
format natively, although you may get better results by encoding
uncompressed video with Cinelerra and then transcoding to H.264 with
ffmpeg.

You might also try MPEG4/mp3 in a QuickTime container rather than an AVI
container, I think MacOS supports that natively also.

Open the session from the command line, eg. "cinelerra /dir/my_file.xml"
If it crashes (Cinelerra is designed to crash "gracefully") just run
"cinelerra" and then Load Backup from the file dialog. And save frequently!

LOL, yes "sane" is perhaps not the right word. Perhaps just picking a
default of the most commonly understood codecs for us newbies would be
sensible though. The professionals will know to look for and adjust
compression settings anyway.

There are no *sane* defaults.

For end-users MPEG-4/mp3 might be ok, although H.264/AAC is much better.

Professionals will rather use some uncompressed format (like the yuv2 you
tried),
which might not be supported by MPlayer though. I saw MPlayer crashing on
professional formats (sane ones!) several times.

Never mind - I didn't notice the compression setting controls for mp3,

Re: [CinCV] Best practice? - audio editing

2009-06-03 Thread John Detwiler
Hi, again,

Just to update you on my progress, and thank you again for your kind help...

1. Installing JACK, Ardour, and xjadeo (qjadeo) wasn't as hard as I'd feared.
(I'm
doing without the RT kernel, since I won't be recording or playing back 'live'.)

2. Ardour is, indeed, very powerful and somewhat intimidating. But, in just
one day,
I've already learned how to do as much as Cinelerra does with audio. So,
everything from
now forward is icing on the cake.

3. xjadeo is slick, even if I don't strictly need it for my simple project.

4. JACK causes some conflicts with the audio hardware (e.g., Cinelerra and Kino
don't
seem to by JACK-aware); so I have to stop/start the JACK server, depending on my
task at the moment.

But, all in all, I'm moving forward quite smartly. Thanks again for your
advice!

Best,

I have exactly the same problem. Moreover If I'm using cinelerra's
smart pass-trough encoding parts re-encoded by cinelerra has broken
aspect ratio but copied parts has original aspect. I can see it on my
camcorder and in kino. They automatically switches aspect ratio during
playback.

But because of my target formats is not dv I'm using ffmpeg, mencoder
and other encoding tools to fix aspect ratio.

[CinCV] problem with screen size

2009-06-03 Thread Enrico Miglino
Hi to all.

No one is working with 16:9 video format? I'm using this format with
journalistic shorts taken with a sony dcr-51 (like a handycam). I prefer
16:9 format and the video tracks are acquired with kino in DV wraw format.
Every thing seems be ok, but when I prepare a DV render (16:9 format) from
cinelerra, image is vertically stretched. I need to use Premiere (bleahhh)
to reconvert the video in a real 16:9 format. You can see some examples of
this kind of production on www.youtube.com/contestivideo

Thanks to all. Enrico
