Well, that is the most recent one in the PPA repository.

You will need to provide either a test case, a file or a detailed set of steps
to reproduce. Otherwise, there is not much that can we do.
Coincidentally, have you tried to compile Cinelerra from source and see if you
still have these crashes? Just asking, in case there are problems with the PPA,
which I maintain, or it is something intrinsic with Cinelerra.

[CinCV] Newbie Questions

2011-05-10 Thread Murray Strome
I am trying to get started (again) with Cinelerra.  I am confused about several
things, (even though I have tried to find the answers in the tutorials and
documentation).

First, the version I have installed is 1:2.1.5-0.16~ppa1~natty2 (cinelerra),
the one that I think is in the repository. I guess that is version 2.1.5-0.16.
Is this the proper one to use?

EXPORTING:
Virtually all of my video files are: .AVI; .MPG (mpeg2); .MOV; or .MOD. Most
are 720X480 either 4:3 or 16:9 and include the audio in the file.

I think I can import these into Cinelerra OK (at least .AVI and .MOV). Should I
be doing something to them before importing them?

I am really confused about the output. I would prefer the output to be .AVI
with the audio included, like it is in the output file. For some purposes (when
I want a smaller file), .mpg (mpeg2) with the audio included is OK.

So how should I render to get these kinds of files? Alternatively, what output
should I choose, and what should I do with the resulting files.

I tried rendering to dv, and it simply would not do it.

I tried .avi, and while I can import that file back into Cinelerra OK, I cannot
open it with MS WIndows applications or most other LINUX applications; VLC
gives the following error:

No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "yuv2". Unfortunately there is
no way for you to fix this.
It will open with KMPlayer. I also tried saving it as mpeg and .mov. These
worked in KMPlayer, but not any of the other LINUX video players. The .mov
files opened in VLC, but the colours were absolutely awful!

EDITING:

I may be confused, but it seems that I can only advance by a multiple of 4
frames. Is there a way that I can select/modify/delete, etc. individual frames?
There are single frames in my converted image that are shifted vertically,
probably because of sprocket hole difficulties. I can best correct for these by
simply deleting that frame, or possibly replacing it with one of the adjacent
ones. Also, there is a "settling time" where the first few frames of a new
scene have a different brightness than the rest of the scene if the new scene
has markedly different exposure than the preceding one.

SPEED CHANGE:

I am not sure if Cinelerra can do arbitrary speed changes. Why would I want to
do this: the main reason is that I have transferred some old 16mm movies to
Video. From looking at the conversion, I think they adjusted the speed from
either 18 or 24 FPS to the video rate of 29.97. The original movies were shot
at either 16fps or 32fps. Also, I might want to do something like this for
special effects in a movie. How do I do it?

CRASH

I find that Cinelerra crashes fairly often. This seems to happen just after
rendering is complete (not repeatable), but in other places as well.

I would like to be able get away from Windows for video editing, but I think i
have a steep learning curve ahead of me.

Thanks for any help.

Murray
