I have not tried it for years, and it was buggy then, too. Don't spend too much effort on getting it to work, there are dvgrab (command line) and Kino (GUI) which can grab DV video nicely. If you want to grab HDV, the only tool I have used for that is mpg1394grab. It is superseded by libiec-something now, but it works for me.
