RE: ethernet 2 rj45's on one cable :P ?

2000-06-01 Thread Awalt, Andrew

Could have some issues with crosstalk. I believe that the reason the IEEE
went with 4 pair cat 5 is for the insulating capabilities of it as opposed
to 2 pair cat 5.

It certainly -can- be done, but it isn't recommended. I've had cases where I
needed to temporarily have two network jacks over one physical cat5 cable.
For this, I just split off the other pairs and crimped another RJ45
connector onto them. I was even able to run fast ethernet over both of the
runs, and it worked reliably for the time that it was needed - well over a
month. I've even had instances when I needed to temporarily run a single
fast ethernet connection over cat3 "phone" cable. Ethernet isn't as picky
about signaling as the IEEE allows it to be, but I wouldn't make a habit of
stretching its limits.

 hey :)

in normal cat5 ethernet, 4 of the 8 wires are used correct ?
if this is the case, would it be possible to have 2 physical links over
 the 1 cat5 cable.
as in in 2 rj45's coming out of each end of the cat5, thus making 2
network connections over the 1 cable. anyone no if this has been done and
how it worked, or if it cant be done, and why :) ?

 thanks :)

 Justin

RE: CCNA 1.0 vs. 2.0

2000-05-30 Thread Awalt, Andrew

Don't worry about it. The 2.0 exam was easy I passed it Friday while only
studying for 2 weeks. There is a lot less subnetting then 1.0 and more lan
technologies (ie. vlan, trunking, etc...). I got a 946.

OK... I've been studying now for almost 4 months. I just want to make sure
I do really well though and I don't feel like I'm quite ready just yet. But
my concern is that I've been studying all of the 1.0 material and I've only
got another month left to take it yes? So my question is this, is the 2.0
exam really THAT much more material? Is it significantly more
difficult/tricky? I'm just trying to decide if I should rush in and take
the 1.0 because it's what I know, or whether I should take a couple months
more to learn the added 2.0 material.

Any thoughts? Thanks all
