Re: Can I picks a PIX?

2000-09-21 Thread David Ristau

PIX is a hardware firewall device, in simple terms, each interface is
considered a
seperate network, PIX does routing as well ( inside interface -> inside
interface,
inside interface -> outside interface & outside interface -> inside
interface)

you will need to create static and conduit statements, to go from low
security to
high security. (these are not dynamic) you will also need to use the
global statement
for high security to low security.

4.3(2) was barely VPN compatible (no ip local pool command), I believe
in 4.3(2)
which I worked with, could only do PIX <-> PIX VPN with the updated DES
license.

you can use NAT, and create a 10.0.0.0/8 network and
you will have 16,000,000 some odd hosts for that network, no need for
DHCP on the inside. IF you want to do PAT, you'll need more than one IP
address
and if you want dedicated web servers inside the PIX you'll need even
more dedicated
outside IP Addresses and set up a 1:1 relationship between outside and
inside.

I had a PIX 510 dropped in my lap, cause the company didn't want to
spend the
$20,000 - $40,000 the consultant wanted to install it. It's a fairly
complex
piece of hardware. If you wish to do Windows networking through the PIX,
I wish
you the best of luck.

are you better at self study ? or do you require some hand holding
during the tough parts ? your answer to these questions would
let you know the answer to the question below.

I think motivation, focus, and specific goals are requirements for self
study,
in a classroom, the instructor provides this.

Re: Can you use the calculator in tests?

2000-08-15 Thread David Ristau

no calculator. here is how I remembered 2^n-2

for class c

2 6 14 30 62
62 30 14 6 2
one is backwards, one is forwards, top is # of subnets bottom is number
of hosts

class B is the same
just in powers of 2 to 16384(-2) for the subnets and the reverse 16384
to 2 for the hosts

if you know powers of two, use the finger method to count the bits.

Re: Class A or C??

2000-08-17 Thread David Ristau

it'd be a class A address with a 24 bit subnet mask
generally 10.9.2.3/24

but remember you are locking yourself into 254 hosts on the entire
network.
A better idea might be to use a 192.x.x.x or a 172.x.x.x and a 16 bit
mask,
this'd make life easier to subnet in the future. 10.9.2.3/16 just won't
work.

the address classes are always the same. the number of bits used in the
mask tell
you how many subnets

Connectivity Issues with ping/tracert

2000-08-30 Thread David Ristau

a web site say 12.0.0.1 sits out on a public network,

a user across the nation, say in Oregon, on his workstation
host 10.0.0.5 cannot ping the server at 12.0.0.1

the user telnets into his Cisco router at 10.0.0.1 and
can ping the server at 12.0.0.1

the user goes out the the internet to several looking-glass
sites and can ping/tracert to the server.

There are no filters on the 10.0.0.1 router

it appears there are no filters in the path to the
12.0.0.1 router from the 10.0.0.1 router

any ideas why this happening or ways to figure it out...

Re: Access Lists !!!

2000-09-06 Thread David Ristau

the difference would be if you were using standard or extended access
lists.

apply standard access lists at the destination router
apply extended access lists at the source router

so for your example to block access to lan B from lan A

apply a standard access list to the in port of router B
or
apply an extended access list to the out port of router A

so to further your example, forbid tcp access to router b from host
10.0.10.10

rd
 |
ra--rc--rb

ra = router a
rb = router b
rc = router c
rd =  router d

using a standard access list to stop 10.0.10.10 traffic on ra will cause
no access to rc or rd
using an extended access list on rb to stop tcp traffic will still allow
traffic to rc and rd

RE: Typical Lab for CCNP [7:70342]

2003-06-09 Thread David Ristau
as far as switching goes, (that's as far as I got with my CCNP)
you will need to perform similar functions in catOS and native IOS.

Getting a switch that will run catOS will not be cheap.

you might need to look at virtual labs i.e. renting rack space

Howdy to All [7:59521]

2002-12-19 Thread David Ristau
Just wanted to give a general shout out to all, I'm new here, figured I'd
need some help with some study issues.

been a CCNA for about 2 1/2 years, looking to pass CCNP exams by August
2003, been working on switching as my first exam.

needed a place to vent, looking around here yesterday I cam across a (not
known by me) exam 640-901, a little research found it a replacment routing
exam, thats ok, oh crap, I'm still studying for the 640-50x exam series. I
hate the new cisco site, can't find any good certification material, I
actually had to search google and the first links were to cisco web sie
exactly what I needed, ciriculum for the 640-60X exam series. looking at
the curiculum for the 640-604 switching exam, there is nothing on HSRP or
ATM Lane, could this be true ? they are quite complex concepts, the exam
looks mich easier if these 2 subjects are left off, though multicast will
still be a bear.

anyway, just wanted to say hi to everyone, and I look forward to
participating and helping out whenever I can.

have a good day !!!

CCNP switching Exam question [7:60537]

2003-01-07 Thread David Ristau
640-604 exam description says under multilayer switching topic
"apply flow masks to influence the type of MLS cache"

what is your interpretation of this statement.

I know there are 3 types of Flow Masks, Destination-IP,
Source-Destination-IP, and IP-Flow.

I also know we can control the MLS cache via the aging time parameter
i.e. SET MLS AGINGTIME 272 or
SET MLS AGINGTIME FAST ...

I don't understand how to control the MLS cache by applying access lists on
the switch.

I can stop packets coming in by placing a deny access filter on an interface
but don't understand how to "influence the type of MLS cache". Am I reading
to deep into this?

thanks for your opinion.

CCNP 640-604 switching exam [7:60987]

2003-01-13 Thread David Ristau
Taking the 640-604 switching exam within the next week or two and my
research shows, from the cisco site, although there was HSRP and ATM LANE
questions on the 640-503 exam, these topis are not included on the 640-604
exam.

Just wanted to confirm, thanks.
