[SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER] question - please help

2000-05-23 Thread Francis Lee

Hi -

I recently upgraded a Cisco 2501 router and loaded IOS 12.0(9). But when I
reload the router, I start seeing the following error message:

--- Begin Log --

- End Log ---

According to "Cisco IOS Software System Error Messages" this means that "the
configuration saved in memory was written by a newer software release" and
suggests that I "examine all the messages printed while the router was
booting".

But the configuration command I put in are quite standard (actually I tftp'd
in from a backup file which is done under IOS 9.14). Judging from the place
where the error message popped up, can anyone shed some light if it
indicates a config error or something else?

Thanks!!

What puzzled me is that, when I have the basic IP configuration, there's no
error message during system bootup. It MAY (I need to confirm that) be the
AppleTalk commands that I entered Interestingly enough, despite the
error message, the router functions without any problem (We have IP and
AppleTalk routing)

thats because you havent upgraded your boot image, and the day ur ios
crashes, your confg will most liekely not be fully loaded because your boot
image is 11.0.
upgrade your boot flash, and u'll be set.

RE: [SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER] question - please help

2000-05-26 Thread Francis Lee

Yeah, Flem, I'm positive the error pops up there... :-)

Well, I did exactly what you suggest and changed the version from 12.0 to
11.0 and the error's gone!

ok... so what does it mean over here? Am I telling the system that the
config is actually done in 11.0?

One thing I notice is that, if I ever want to modify the configuration, as
soon as I "write mem", the config goes back to "version 12.0".. :-(

Are you sure that the message was printed right
after the system bootstrap ?

It sure looks like an IOS message and I expect to see
this message later on , as IOS is processing the
config file .

You can easely generate this message .

1/ copy your running config to an tftp server.
2/ edit this config file and change the version
command
to reflect a software version higher than you are
   running .
3/ tftp the modified config to startup
4/ reload the router without saving the running config
   to the startup config .

00:00:08: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Serial1/6, changed
state to down
00:00:08: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Serial1/7, changed
state to down
00:00:09: %SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER: Configuration from
version 16.0 may not be correctly understood
^
I changed the version keyword to version 16.0 .

As the IOS loads it looks at the version entry in the
config . If the keyword indicates an older version
than the one you are running it prints out this
message .

What puzzels me is that you just did the opposite :)
