Passed CCIE Written

2001-02-07 Thread Hal White

I passed the CCIE Written yesterday morning. I had taken the CCIE written
about a month ago but the test crashed and I had to fight with Cisco and
Prometric for a month before I could take it again for free. I read
Caslow's book, Routing TCP/IP Vol. 1 by Jeff Doyle, the token ring white
papers and the exam cram book. The token ring white papers were very
helpful in understanding bridging because I do not work with it at all. I
already had my CCNP and CCDP so this also helped and I would not recommend
taking the CCIE written without having finished at least your CCNP
certification. I also took the certification zone test before I took the
exam last month, and it was not that helpful.

I am planning to take schedule the lab for this summer. I am going to
purchase the Solutions Labs and the ccbootcamp labs today and use them to
study. I work for a Cisco reseller so I have plenty of equipment sitting
around to use for study labs. My company has said they will pay for
training so I am looking at Global Knowledge and IT Academy prep courses.
If anyone has any recommendations on training please let me know.

Token Ring White Paper

2001-02-08 Thread Hal White

Several people have asked me where I got the Token Ring white paper that I
used to study for the CCIE written. I got the paper from
www.certificationzone.com when it was free for download a few months ago.
Unfortunately, it is not free this month. If you have a membership you
should definitely read this white paper. If you are not a member then go to
their site and decide if it is worth spending the money. I was not a
member, but others on the list have said it was a good investment.
Caslow's book and the exam cram both have chapters about bridging and token
ring that are also helpful although they do not explain it as well and as
clearly as the white paper on certification zone.

There is another document about Token Ring that is also helpful which can be
found at http://www.groupstudy.com/notes/notepages/rif2.html

I hope this helps everyone who is preparing for the CCIE Written.

Re: Token Ring White Paper

2001-02-08 Thread Hal White

That is one the one that I used. It has been so long since I printed it out
that I forgot where it came from. I am not sure if it is the same one as
the one on certificationzone.com or not, but it is the one I used and it is
free. I apologize if I gave the wrong site but it has been several months
since I printed the document and it is a pdf so there is no URL on the
bottom.

Re: TCP Load Balancing with a PIX

2001-03-02 Thread Hal White

Another thing to try if you don't have a large budget is load balancing on a
Linux box.

RE: Napster Question

2000-09-29 Thread Hal White

Blocking these IP addresses will only block users from accessing the main
napster servers and will not block access to other napster servers, such as,
opennap, which can be found easily by using the napigator program. The best
way to block Napster is to block the ports that the client uses which are
,,,. Don't quote me on these ports because I can't find my
documentation at the moment, but I think they are right.

RE: Napster Question

2000-09-29 Thread Hal White

I found my documentation and of course my memory had failed me. The ports
for napster are ,6699,,9009. I think blocking these will disable
napster.

Failed CID!

2000-10-06 Thread Hal White

I can't believe that I just failed the CID by six questions. I did not fail
because I do not understand network design, I failed because the test was so
horribly written. The questions were not hard, they were vague. There were
several questions with typos and errors. This test was as bad as the old
CID test which I also thought was horribly written. I put in alot of study
time, I read the CID book, watched the online CID class and I read several
desing documents on Cisco's site. Hopefully, Cisco will rewrite this test
soon because it is awful.
Then to make matters worse, I was mad driving back to my office and I wasn't
paying attention and I got a speeding ticket. Hopefully my day will
improve, because it could not get any worse.
