Please keep in mind that just because you have 2 links to the same provider,
it does not necessarily mean that they are run to the same POP. this can
cause some problems with load balancing 2 different links.

Re: Frame Relay - slow link? overutilized? [7:14163]

If this is the case, and you are adding more users to reach the average 70%
benchmark remember that most service providers will grantee 50% of your
total circuit, so anything over 50% could be tagged as discard eligible (red
Frames) and dropped. Causing lots of re-sends to complete a TCP connection
and thus latency...

RE: DE bits [7:15210]

2001-08-08 Thread Michael Damkot

To Clarify, usually the DE bit is set at Half the CIR, since FR is usually
only guaranteed to half the total bandwidth, therefore, the customer can use
the total circuit, but if congestion occurs, Frames that are over half the
CIR are the first to go..

But you also have to keep in mind there are other things in place to avoid
lost data. IE BECN, FECN

Hi all,

Put simply a DE (Discard Eligible) bit is set on anything above the CIR
(Committed Information Rate) ie if it is not committed it is discard
eligible.

At least that's the way I understand it.

RE: CCNA exam [7:15284]

2001-08-08 Thread Michael Damkot

Hea gang, I got curious, so I looked it up. On the CCCA (Cisco Career
Certifications Agreement,) (the newest revision, V.7 anyway), where the
signature is required there is a check box for over 18 and a box for under
18. If you are under 18 you must have a parent or Guardian sign the CCCA as
well.. This isn't necessarily a representation of the CCA (Cisco
Confidentiality agreement) But if you can agree to the Certification
agreement, you have to be able to take the tests... I would contact either
Cisco or Prometric for sure.

But I say go for it my man, most people say I'm doing well for so young,
(22) but you'll have me beat by FAR!!!

Re: Sniffing my broadband connection to my ISP ??? [7:30689]

2002-01-02 Thread Michael Damkot

Erick, you are seeing 224.0.0.1 Multicast Queries because 224.0.0.1 is
reserved for "all systems on segment." This is the IP that the IGMP queries
are going out to allowing the Router to determine if it needs to "request
upstream" for any Multicast Streams. It is pretty common to see that..

Re: Carrier Transitions : Any Comments [7:30829]

2002-01-05 Thread Michael Damkot

I couldn't help myself, I have done the "tech support" side of this for a
while and now take escalations on issues such as these, as well as teach
others how to troubleshoot theses issues, so I thought I'd throw my two
cents in, late as it may be. Everything I have read on this thread thus far,
is true. Testing a circuit can, many times, clear up the problems that the
customer may be seeing. On the other side of the coin, because of the
fluctuant nature of Layer 1 and 2 equipment in provider networks, this can
often cause what appears to be a fix, and becomes a chronic issue since
tech-support groups work on numbers as well as MTTR. More often than not if
it's up and pingable for 1-2 hours, this issue is marked as resolved.

With that said, as mentioned earlier, look for bipolar violations, this can
be a sign of a few things, but the exact cause can be hard to track down.
If the issue continues beyond this weekend, I would suggest that you contact
your provider and have a dispatch sent to your premise. But once they are
there and they check the common problems, make SURE, they run a HEAD-TO-HEAD
test for at LEAST 3 minutes per test pattern using 0's, 1's and either 1 in
8 or 3 in 24. When they do this and run clean, make sure there are errors
sent from the far end to the onsite tech's test unit, and vise versa. Since
your ISP and the circuit provider are more than likely different providers,
make sure both are on the phone to ensure end-to-end testing.

I am available offline if you need anything further

Cisco 1200 Catalyst switches [7:31548]

2002-01-10 Thread Michael Damkot

I have recently been given two 1200 switches but cannot access them. I am
running Win2000 with Vandyke CRT3.4 and my co-worker is running win NT 4.0
with Hyperterm, neither one of us can get any response from either switch.
Any suggestions??
