remote access?

2001-02-09 Thread Paver, Charles

Hi. I have a 1602 router, as well as a 2514 router at home. And an
external modem. I was wondering, is there any way to connect from say,
work, to home, via pcanywhere, or dial in to the router to control it?

Thanks

cant telnet into a serial port!

2001-02-02 Thread Paver, Charles

I may be missing something here, but how come i cant telnet into my serial
port's ip address? I can telent into my lan address, and my pc is using a
class c address on the same subnet as teh ethernet port, but my serial port
is a class a address. im mentioning this because my 2502 router has 2 serial
ports and one t.ring. How to get in--and not using the console port?!!

db9 to rj45 converter

2001-02-01 Thread Paver, Charles

Hello. I need some advice on the DB9 to rj45 coverter i just bought at
microcenter. The pins nor wires in the back are not connected, so i have no
way of knowing which pins go to which hole in the db9. Each of the holes
are labeled from 1 to 9, but none of the wires have labeling on them. Does
anyone or can anyone tell me which pins I should line up with their
respective holes? Thanks!

tcpip question

2001-01-16 Thread Paver, Charles

Again, the tcp/ip question
 209.221.163.0/27 is subnetted, 1 subnets
D 209.221.163.0 [90/2221056] via 63.249.3.9, 13:31:00, Ethernet0

In this example I took off a router: the 209.221.163.0 is a network ip,
right? But what network, as in, where is the network--the router I am
accessing? I understand the 63.x.xx. is the next hop router, but is that
the origination point, of the destination point (the 209.x.x.x?) Thanks

eigrp study question

2001-01-16 Thread Paver, Charles

Hi. I have a couple of questions regarding eigrp in the bscn book.

1. how do you look at details of a hello packet? Is a hello packet that
ospf uses any different from one that eigrp uses? Logic tells me yes since
there is no dr/bdr with eigrp.

2. what is a successor? defn is a primary route used to reach a
destination, but i thought a successor was a router itself!

3. what is the igrp algorithm (is it the one on page 257)? it says here
tha tigrp * 256 = eigrp's algorithm, but was wondering, why multiply by 256,
and not a different number?

4. says that eigrp supports both lan and wan (p.249)--Ok, I was thinking,
does that mean I can run a routing protocol internally? I think not!

5. and if anyone has the time to explain feasibility to me... It seems
tough right now to understand, stuff like: the local best metric (current
feasible distance) than next router metric learned from the router!
ugh...

telnetting?

2001-01-15 Thread Paver, Charles

Hi. Was wondering if someone could explain to me the following: If I want
to telnet into another machine, like from pc to pc, how do i do it? I mean,
I can telnet into a router or switch once I obviously know the ip address;
but even when I do know the ip address of another pc, I still cant telnet
into the pc on a network! Any ideas? Thanks!

RIP

2001-01-15 Thread Paver, Charles

Hi again! Was wondering if anyone knows how to implement RIP on windows nt
for 2 pcs (1 ws and 1 server) nt 4.0? I know to check it in the tcp/ip
properties (enable ip forwarding) but do i need 2 NIC cards? And where do i
add the static route? Thanks in advance! (I have a router at home, but
wanted to see if I could install RIP at home on the pcs)

ccnp: does one area = 1 network?

2001-01-11 Thread Paver, Charles

Hello. I was wondering (after reading ospf) if 1 network = 1 area, or if
you can have several networks inside of one area?
And on page 177 in Ciscopress BSCN, it says the following guidelines: # of
routers in a domain/single area= minimum of 20. That is hard to understand.
Cant we have one domain with one router? Like, if we have a LAN here, with
access to the internet, isnt that one domain with one router?
Thanks!

Couldnt find it under there! Also, is there a good site or page that
