Active vs Passive Routing [7:18243]

2001-09-02 Thread Subba Rao

I am trying to setup an ipsec network connection with a remote network with
PIX
as it's gateway. For that I have to setup the gateway information in
/etc/gateways. The routed man page gives the following syntax for the page.

  name1 gateway name2 metric value

What is the difference between an active gateway and a passive gateway? What
type of gateway is preffered for ipsec setup?

Thanks for any info.

Promiscous interface and remote users [7:16734]

2001-08-21 Thread Subba Rao

Hi,

We have 2 sniffer systems on NT and on Unix. The sniffer puts the ethernet
interfaces
on both the systems in promiscuous mode. Currently we are not worried about
any local
users on the system. Are there any threats from remote users on the
promiscuous interface,
on either system? When I say "remote users", I am talking about John Doe on
our network who
has no business with either of these system. John Doe could be on Internet
as well but has
no user accounts on these systems. Would he get any vulnerable information
from the sniffer
interfaces on either system?

Thank you in advance for any info.

I have "set" and "port" from the in the "enable" and "conf t" modes. It looks
like these commands don't exist in these modes.

The PDF pages at Cisco are confusing too.

Spanning on 2900XL switch [7:10107]

2001-06-27 Thread Subba Rao

How do I setup a span port on a 2900XL switch? The switch is
running IOS 11.2

I did not know routers and switches ran IOS. My understanding was
that switches ran different OS, like PIX does, from routers.

Thank you for any help.

The Cisco PIX firewall performs stateful packet inspection/filtering. Cisco
IOS
firewall cannot do that.

3Com information [7:7838]

2001-06-09 Thread Subba Rao

Is there any forum to discuss 3Com switchs/hub related issues? Cisco seems to
be everywhere, but I have seen several 3Com equipment in the smaller
campuses.

Any information is appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

What is demarc zone? [7:3576]

2001-05-08 Thread Subba Rao

Hi,

I am still new to Cisco networking. While touring a network facility, one of
the network engineer's showed a telecom closet and said it is the "demarc
zone".
I heard DMZ a lot (but I could swear I heard "demarc zone too).

What is "demarc zone" in networking?

Thank you in advance.
