Router hangs after system start

2001-03-14 Thread Zahid Hassan

Hi,

I would really appreciate if someone could
help me with the following problem :

After powering up a 2500 router it goes through
the boot process and hangs after a system restart.

I can enter the ROM Monitor mode, but the console freezes
and takes no command.

Has anyone got any clue what this could be ?

Re: Is Sybex CCIE study guide good? [7:13951]

2001-07-27 Thread Zahid Hassan

Hi,

I wouldn't rate it good.
Probably you would want to use it to just to warm-up the topics
but not further. The book doesn't go into any details nor does it cover
the materials in the exam.
All the other books mentioned are far better than the Sybex, specially
Caslow's BRS for CCIE.

Good luck.

MPLS Basic

2000-06-08 Thread Zahid Hassan

Hi everyone,

I was reading some basic Overview on MPLS and came accross some questions,
I wonder if somebody could explain this to me:

- assume that we have a router.
- On it, we have a ethernet interface enabled for MPLS
- Ethernet max transmission unit (MTU)is 1500
- A packet as big as the max MTU now needs to be sent through the ethernet
- A label is 4 bytes long

We cannot transmit more then the MTU over the ethernet ?
does MPLS provide fragmentation ??

Thanks in advance,

Regards

I took the CCIE written beta exam on Tuesday.
150 questions in 180 minutes.

I can't think of any area in networking that was not covered in this
exam, including VoIP, MPLS, Security, 6500 Switch (MSFC), IPX, (several
FDDI questions, believe it or not), X.25, Frame Relay (CAR, TS,
Queuing), ATM (AALx in detail), Ethernet, TCP/IP, (OSPF + IS-IS + EIGRP
+ BGP in detail), Multicasting (extensively)

Detailed OSPF means knowing all LSA types inside out. You must be able
to analyze OSPF database line-by-line and know where and what every
parameter is. Detailed BGP means, not only knowing its fundamentals, but
also some advanced commands that are even hardly used in the CCIE lab.
Commands like "bgp deterministic med" (NDA: not exact same command).
There were at least 5 questions on IS-IS.

IMHO, the questions were tough, excellent, real-world, and very
challenging. There were very few ambiguous questions. Out of 150
questions, about half of them came with diagrams or router
configurations, or show outputs.

Most of the pitfalls and tricks that one faces in the CCIE lab are
covered in this exam. I dare to say that each question is a small
scenario/lab by itself. Keeping the ISDN line quiet, controlling the
PVCs in Frame Relay, redistribution between routing protocols (subnets
in OSPF, no auto-sum and metrics in EIGRP, default-information originate
BGP, passive interfaces, loops, recursive tunnels.)

I have always advised my students to go for CID exam before attempting
the CCIE written. CID would give the student almost 80% of the knowledge
needed to pass the CCIE written. That rule does not apply to this new
written exam. The closest exam that I can point out is: the CCIE lab.

A word of advice to those who have already passed the written: Do not
let it expire!
A word of advice to those who are planning to take the exam: Take it
before the new format is introduced!

Why can't I ping my own interface address? [7:25040]

2001-11-02 Thread Zahid Hassan

Hi Folks,

I am not being able to ping a local interface on a router.
The encapsulation is default and is connected back to back
on a serial interface to the next router. The output of show interface
shows that the interface is up.

I would appreciate if someone could shed some light into this problem.

Thanking in advance.

Zahid

Hi Nathan,

Good to hear about your idea.

I would also be interested to share experiences or maybe do lab practices
together.

Hi
Anyone in London, UK want to form a study group where we can bounce around a
few ideas and lab practise strategies? I have a fully kitted lab with 7
routers with voice, 2 switches, ISDN simulator etc. I am based in London,
would prefer something a little less virtual if possible.
Lemme know.

CSS 11150 Booting Problem [7:58372]

2002-12-01 Thread Zahid Hassan
Dear All,

After a power outage, one of our CSS is failing to boot up properly.
Every time its rebooted, it goes straight to the OFFDM although the
Primary boot device has been selected to be Disk. I have formatted the
Disk and loaded a new image, it booted with the new image once and its
Loading to OFFDM every time its rebooted.

I would be really grateful if someone could shed some light on this
problem.

Regards,

Zahid

PIX Question [7:51095]

2002-08-09 Thread Zahid Hassan

Hi All,

I have got a PIX firewall with two interfaces, the outside interface has a
public IP address and
inside a private IP address. I will need to connect a server with a public
IP address.
I know that the PIX firewall can be configured not to NAT a specific IP
address.

Can I connect a server with a public IP address on the inside interface of
the PIX ?
If yes, what will be the default gateway, the inside or the outside
interface of the PIX ?

Thanks in advance.

Zahid

BGP Stability problem over DSL link [7:55507]

2002-10-13 Thread Zahid Hassan

Dear All,

I trying to configure BGP peering over a DSL link.
The peering drops after few minutes, comes back once the DSL link is reseted.
Other than that Internet connectivity over the DSL link seems to be working
fine.
Has anyone experienced any similar problem with BGP over DSL ?
I would really appreciate any thoughts on this matter.

Regards,

Zahid
