Question about Spanningtree port costs/priorities etc.. on catalyst switches

2001-03-27 Thread ciscosis

if for example switch port 1/1 has a port cost of 10 and a port priority of
32
and switch port 1/2 has a port cost of 20 and a port priority of 16 which
port forwards which port blocks
does port priority take presidence over port cost?

first correct answer wins !

Re: trunking

2001-03-23 Thread ciscosis

ISL has a number of advantages over dot1q, for example it supports per vlan
spanning tree (PVST) which allows a separate spantree instance per Vlan
which makes networks more scalable and more stable than dot1q based.

It is Cisco proprietary but it interoperates with dot1q (common spanning
tree) compliant switches (using Cisco protocol PVST+)

If you are building a large cisco switched network with alot of Vlans and
are worried about issues such as spanning tree convergence/ stability
/reliability .. definately go for ISL

Re: Vlan Question

2001-03-22 Thread ciscosis

Brad

I expect you know - but you must have a layer3 device (router) between the
two Vlans
you can then apply access lists to the vlan interfaces on the router.
What about dual NIC's in the server one connected to the Lan the other to
the single user It would be a lot cheeper just don't allow the cards on
the same network and don't let them forward (route) between each other.

hope that's of some help

Subject: Vlan Question

 Scenario:
Got a client who has a person on the network that does not want to
be on the network but wants access to the server. My thought was to
install
a switch, setup to Vlans, one for all the users (10 or so) and the second
Vlan for the 1 user by himself. This way no one can get to his machine,
then
setup an access list to permit his Vlan to access the first Vlan and deny
all the other users to his Vlan. Does this sound right? Anything I am
missing? Seeing if I understand Vlans correctly or not.

Re: BCMSN - exam question

2001-03-21 Thread ciscosis

Thanks for the advice Charlie,

I have attended the Course and have some experience of designing/supporting
smaller cisco campus networks
What worried me was that when I read the Exam outline /prep guide on the
cisco web site, it said that ATM and LANE would be covered in the exam. I
don't remember covering these in the course except for a very brief
mention of the various trunking standards used. I expect that's why it was
mentioned in the outline but I wanted to be sure

Thanks again

I'm not sure if you have been on the BCMSN course (I hope you have if
you have a copy of the notes!) but that was certainly sufficient for
me. Of all of the CCNP exams, the BCMSN fitted the course notes the
 best.
It's difficult when people ask questions like this because we don't
know how much experience they have, you could have been designing and
installing Catalyst based LAN solutions for years.

 Cheers

 Charlie
