By the way, you can have a chance to win a FREE 16MB Flash Memory Disk if

Re: longest match vs. other metrics [7:41692]

2002-04-16 Thread samuel

i think it choose longest match,
what happend if this case between static route entry and eigrp route entry?
yes ,it choose longest.
but you know static route administrative distance is 1.

Sean Wolfe P4HkO{OPBNE
:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Quick question, hope it's not too trivial:

When a router decides to forward a packet based on the longest match
principle, does this supersede other factors?

For example, if there is a route to network A via EIGRP, but a more
specific
route available via OSPF, does it choose OSPF because of longest match, or
EIGRP because of lower administrative distance (90 vs. 110)?

Thanks folks, fun reading your posts as always. Wish me luck as I take
BCSN

Assuming that there are 2 bridges and configured as follows.

Ethernet Host.A -- Bridge#1 --- FDDI --- Bridge#2 -- Ethernet host.B

There are 3 hosts :

Host B (ethernet host in right)
Host C (FDDI host in fddi segment of middle)

Host A, B, and C hosts can communicate each other?

if so, how to configure two briges, translational bridge or others?

3 questions [7:17803]

2001-08-29 Thread samuel

For u experts out there, I have 3 questions.

How do u use autoinstall and avoid configuring encapsulation:
Does the link experience bit errors after using autoinstall?
The router on the other end send SLARPs or does it support HDLC?
And do the upper layers handle error control ?
I read the cisco website but it doesnt answer my questions

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios122/122cgcr/
ffun_c/ffcprt1/fcf002.htm#33594

When do u choose IPX WAN?
I know that u deploy it when bandwidth is low , but do u deploy it when
there are a few routes or moderate routes or many routes? How about
services? Do you deploy this when there are limited or wide variety of
service types?
Again I checked the cisco web but doesnt answer me. a lot of concept
but not practical.

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/wanbu/bpx8600/8_2_0/82ov
er/sysmch02.htm

Regarding stratacom environments how do u do out-of-band call setups?

Thanks in advance

RE: Voice and ATM for lab plus more.

2001-01-16 Thread Samuel Chen

Well, You need 2 x 3640 because you can buy the NM-1FE1R2W(This will take
care the FastEthernet ISL) then put the WIC-1T and WIC-B-U on this Network
module. Also, put the NM-1A-MM (will work with the LS1010) and the NM-2V
with 2FXS on this 2 3640. The token ring part you need a catalyst
3920.(It's on the CCIE Lab Exam). Buy a NP-1R, NP-2E and a few NP-4T for
your 4000 router. On the ISDN; look up Adtran Atlas 550. They have a combo
550 box($3100 on cnet.com) which come with 2PRI and 4BRI. With this Adtran
box, you can have all your isdn calling each other.

First let me say any help would be appreciated.

I am attempting to set up a lab at my work. We have about 6 2501's, 1 2502
and 3 4000's, one of them useful having the 4 port serial module. So far I
have the 4000 as a frame switch and 4 connecting 2501's.. I also am going
to bring in the rest of the 2501's eventually.. I was told to go ahead and
buy what I need in what I feel is useful. (I am curious as to how far they
let me go with this). I know I need at least 1 more token ring, 2 bri
interfaces.. Voice, ATM.
I'm thinking:
2511
2620 with 2-port fxs int card
2610 with 2-port fxs int card - I'm wondering if these also need the Voice
interface cards...
2504 - tokenring and BRI
2503 - BRI
Catalyst 5000 or 2901

I was hoping to do ATM.. Maybe instead of the 2600's, use 3620 or 40 and
add Single-port 155-mbps ATM OC-3 MNM to each with a Lightspeed 1010.
(dreaming? I'm guessing the above modules will not be the optimal match.)
2 tokenring mau's..
We actually have 2 ISDN lines I hope to incorporate as well for the ISDN.

Any criticism/help would be appreciated. If this is the dumbest thing you
have ever seen, let me know... That is why I'm asking for help!!

Nope. Each router need one ip and the virtual ip will be all computer's

use.

A question was recently posed:

Two routers-subnet for 12 hosts. Do hsrp.

naturally you assume a subnet for 14 hosts, one address each for router
a and b. then don't you need an address for the virtual ip for hsrp.
This only leaves 11 host addresses available.

My question was, "can you use one of the addresses from one of the
routers for the virtual ip address for hsrp". This would put you back
up to 12 host addresses.

Is this the right answer?

thanks,

RE: make your router as a DHCP client

2001-01-11 Thread Samuel Chen

Yeah, The router can do the negotiation on Serial line on my 2501 and 2621
with 12.1.5.
The command is "ip add negotiated"
This command is new to me and it only on Serial Port. I need it on the
ethernet.

I also did a search on Cisco Doc. But it only tell me how to make your
router become a DHCP Server. Not the Client.

The static route will not work because you still need an ip address on the
ethernet. Plus, the ip address dhcp command is the command make your router
a DHCP Server. And it's trying to lookup the DHCP ip address pool to offer
on the ethernet.

Re: Pre-sales People

2000-07-01 Thread nigel samuel

That does sound strange, I did work as a pre -sales guy for a while. I
basically knew most customers don't want to spend lots of cash on equipment,
but it was important to think about the future growth. Of course some
customers were max out on their network, so tossing money at the problem
was necessary. Pre-sales are sometimes told to push certain equipment
depending on vendor discounts, incentives etc.

In that case it does sound strange 2 -6000's to replace one 8 port switch.
Is it possible the 8 port switch was acting as a backbone to lot of servers
down stream? Usually the Pre-sales engineer's proposal will give a reason
for the recommendation. If they are think about the future you can always
add another later??

Hi! Does anyone else work with a pre-sales engineer that over quotes bids

We have a customer that has an 8-port intel switch. This guy suggested

Catalyst 6000s to replace this single Intel switch. Needless to say the
customer was a little shocked when he saw the cost. We were replacing an

Are all pre-sales engineers like this? Im just curious. I havent done
much
pre-sales work as I enjoy the post-sales work quite a bit more.

 any input is appreciated.

 thanks!

Re: Cisco Router for Frame Relay

2000-06-27 Thread Nigel Samuel

Try to get the 2521 or similar, It has 4 serial ports so you can use up to
four dlci's. The 4000 is good also but you will have to buy the modules and
it is more expensive.

Subject: Cisco Router for Frame Relay

 Hi,

I want to purchase a router to configure as a frame relay switch. Can
anyone out there tell me which is the best option for this or can any
cisco
2500 series router can do the job.

 Regards,
 Amir

ccie home lab

2000-06-15 Thread Nigel Samuel

Wanted some ideas what should be next in a home lab, as of now
it consist of:

1-2501
1-2502
1-2121
1-2513

I need to get some TR mau's

But for the CCIE should I get a switch? (approx. 3K) or would
it benefit me more to get 2 additional routers?
