Totally disagree, 

I'm finding that it's not just a vendor specific field, it's
technology, that you focus on, because regardless
of the vendor, there is only so many ways you can implement technology.
Don't just learn the vendor, learn the methodology of the technology that it
supports, and it will make life a lot easier.

wouldn't be taking the CCIE lab next year if I thought it was a waste of
