2000-07-11 Thread Chuck Church

Daryn,

Are you using 3Com NICs on any devices? I've noticed that 3Coms DO
NOT autonegotiate correctly with Cisco set-based switches. One side will
always come up half duplex, the other side full. Intel and Compaq NICs
don't seem to have this problem. You're better off hardcoding everything to
100 full, switch ports and NICs, assuming everything is capable of it. Do a
'sh port count' and 'sh port' on the switches, make sure there's no errors
on any port. Check the servers first. Very slow response is a symtom of
mismatched duplexity (is that a word?).

Re: MS Exchange and Outlook 97

2000-07-11 Thread joel.studtmann

You know, since Patrick brought this up...

NT will, by default, use protocols in the order in which they were
installed. By default, Netbeui and NWLink are installed on NT, and if
TCP/IP is installed afterwards, NT (And Outlook/Exchange) will attempt to
use Netbeui and NWLink first, and won't even attempt a TCP/IP connection
until Netbeui and NWLink have timed out.

If you don't need these protocols, remove them from your NT workstations.

If you DO need these protocols, but use TCP as your primary transport, set
TCP first in the network bindings by:

1. Open the Network Icon in the control panel
2. Select the Bindings tab
3. Click the plus sign to the left of NetBIOS interface.
4. Highlight the WINS Client (TCP/IP), and click the Move-Up button until
it's listed at the top
5. Open up Workstation client
6. Again, highlight the WINS Client (TCP/IP), and click Move-Up until it's
at the top

7. While not as important, doing the same for the Server service can
improve performance if other users connect to that individual workstation.

If your Exchange server is running anything besides TCP/IP (And I can't
think of any good reason why it should), double-check the bindings there as
well.

You'll have to reboot for the binding change to take effect (Not that you
EVER have to reboot NT after a change), but if your workstations still have
Netbeui, etc, they'll notice an incredible performance difference.

This may sound a bit off bit I remember seeing an article on Microsofts site
about protocol bindings and Outlook/Exchange. I used to do this at a place I
worked a year ago but I forget what the key is? Basically from what I
remember - the IP protocol was last on the list so the client->server would
try to talk all protocols until it got to IP at the end.

I will jump off now an see if I can find it for you.

RE: MS Exchange and Outlook 97

2000-07-10 Thread Dennis Olson

You can also change the RPC binding order for the exchange client to bind
TCP/IP first. This fixes 90% of the slow Outlook (on open) issues I run
into. I can guide you further if you need it.

Just as a test you might want to put a host file on a workstation
 192.76.x.x
myexchange ). Upon resetting the nbtstat, see if your Outlook 97 message
doesn't
pop up very quickly. If it does ( it probably will ) you either need to
modify
your DNS or main hosts file.

Good Luck!!

>From the workstations, can you ping the Exchange server by netbios name? By
hostname? Is anything else slowing down? Why forward udp broadcasts? If
you are using WINS this will do nothing for you but send unnecessary traffic
across the backbone. I wouldn't say its a "network" issue as the 6500 will
be able to handle anything ( but a spantree loop ) you throw at it. Since
it's the core I assume you are trunking. Are your trunks setup properly?
What about routing? Have you used a sniffer yet to trace an Outlook
session?

Just a couple questions that come to mindKenny

MS Exchange and Outlook 97

2000-07-09 Thread Bartlett, DS1

After our recent upgrade to our backbone (6500's) we are now pushing traffic
at incredible speeds. Unfortunately my users only notice that it now takes
forever for their outlook to open up. We use Exchange 5.5 (sp2) and Outlook
97. We do not have messenger services loaded. We have Novell servers
on-line, but the Exchange servers do not have IPX client software loaded.
Sometimes it takes as much as 2 minutes for mail to come up. I have allowed
all udp traffic to be forwarded so netbios will work.

Any thoughts would be appreciated to an extremely frustrated administrator
who is fed up with users.
