2001-06-20 Thread Sivaramakrishna Iyer Krishnan

Hi All,

I am new to Cisco's certification and want to start with CCNA. Can you
suggest the following :-

1. What are the books I need to buy ?.
2. How much time does it take to cover all this material ?
3. Any tips / comments / suggestions for preparing and taking the test.

Thanks,
Krishnan.

1) Todd Lammle's CCNA Study Guide for CCNA ver2 is good. I found the Cisco
Press Internetworking Technologies Handbook 2nd Edition useful (selected
areas). (3rd Edition coming)
2) It depends on what you already know, your skill at learning, and how much
time that you can devote to the task. It would be good if you can find a
study partner. Share expenses on books and equipment.
3a)It is useful to have equipment on which to practice. One router is good.
Three routers is best. Consider eBay as a source. Buy multiport routers if
you can. The 2500 series is common and reasonably priced. A good basic lab
would be a 2503, 2513, 2523, and 2509. A 1900 series switch would be good.
(b) Study to become a networker. Taking the test should be an indication of
your progress. Having said that, there are test taking skills. Cisco uses
specific vocabulary. Learn the Cisco answer. Know subnetting. Know the OSI
seven layer model and encapsulation.
(c) www.cisco.com has a wealth of information. Learning how to navigate it
takes some time. 99% of your questions will be answered there.
(d) Never feel discouraged. You are learning a new language and a new
culture. It takes time. Study some every day.
(e) Lurk on this list. Read the archives.
(f) Welcome.
