I think we just have different diagrams in our heads.
And they're probably both different to what John has in mind ;-)

But we seem to agree that you summarise at the ABR - and John hasn't said
where he's putting his ABR(s). So it really depends on the OSPF design, and
how John's emerging global empire is split into areas.

Jenny you are correct if the ABR is sydney, and its the only. Did he not
want to summarise networks from each office into sydney? you can do that
from bris/melb

If you have networks in brisbane, would you not summarise those at the
brisbane abr?

I think i have the wrong diagram in my head :)

Why would you have summaries on all three?
If the connection to the global empire is from Sydney, the ABR is presumably
(although not stated) the Sydney router. So that's where you'd summarise.
Mind you, my brain stopped working a few hours ago, so treat me gently if
I've overlooked something obvious...

Your summary addresses will be configured on your ABR's, these summary's
will be propagated to area 0. So your summarys will be on
Sydney/Brisbane/Melbourne using the area range command

OSPF Route SUmmary [7:50208]

2002-07-30 Thread John Brandis

Please forgive my stupid questions of late.

I have a simple test lab network consisting of some 3 x 2503 routers. Each
router represents a city in Australia and a private networks on the ethernet
interface.

Sydney:

10.64.0.0 - 10.64.7.254 /24

Melbourne:

10.64.8.0 - 10.64.9.254 /24

Brisbane:

10.64.10.0 - 10.64.11.254 /24

I now want/need to implement a route summary for my entire network such as

10.64.0.0 /21 SYDNEY
10.64.0.8/23 MELBOURNE
10.64.0.10/23 BRISBANE

My question is, where/which router would I insert this route summary ? In
terms of where the routers are, Sydney router is the device that has a
connection to the upstream routers of my fantasy global empire consisting of
offices in US/UK/Africa and just lately, some where in the Polar Ice Caps.

Appreciate any assistance you can offer.

John
