You will need to have connectivity end to end across the pvc.  Even a local
ping will traverse the WAN (actually 4 times), so your remote router will
also need to be mapped correctly.

Actually, I thought about it again, and I am not sure you will be able to
ping your own interface on a multipoint interface due to the fact that the
ping must transverse the WAN and it must know which pvc to route across. 
This poses a problem when there are multiple pvcs and your local ip is
assigned to all of them.
