Thanks to all respondents to this email. My 2509 Router is now working back to normal. > %SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER: Configurations from version 12.0 may not be correctly under stood. Solution: Upgrade to newer version of bootrom. >Router freezes at "Translating "RouterC_TermServ". Rodgers Moore's solution worked: The "no ip domain-lookup" command should be on the router behind the terminal server, this won't get rid of the "translating" line/error/whatever but it will cause the prompt to return quickly. That's just your bootstrap version possibly not able to understand your 12.1 config Nothing to worry about. You can always upgrade your boot flash chips but it's not worth it. RE: 2509 start-up message!! Still not working....
Ash: As I indicated in my previous post, the message "%SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER: Configurations from version 12.0 may not be correctly understood." is nothing to worry about, unless you intend to run your router off the mini-IOS version (system bootstrap) loaded on your router--which is NOT recommended nor is it the default mode of router operation. See the part of your boot sequence that says: System Bootstrap, Version 11.0(10c)XB2, PLATFORM SPECIFIC RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) That's your mini-IOS (or boot image) used to boot the router, to load IOS images on the router, or as an interim image that can be is used in the event the system image (full IOS version) on the router becomes corrupt. It's IOS version is 11.0. Now look at the part of your boot sequence that says: Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software IOS (tm) 2500 Software (C2500-JOS56I-L), Version 12.1(5), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) That's your full IOS image (or system image) that is used during normal operation of your router. It's IOS image is 12.1. The SYSTEM image of your router is the image that normally runs on a router and is the image used when your router configurations are created. Should the system image fail, the router will boot falling back to the mini-IOS (boot image) which is an 11.0 IOS image. Your access-list commands (and possibly other things) WILL NOT BE CORRECTLY UNDERSTOOD because I believe in IOS 11.2, the behavior as to how access-lists were interpreted, changed. You'll keep receiving this error message until you update your boot image with a version equal to your system image. The only way to get rid of this message is by loading a system bootstrap (boot image) of the same version as your system image. As for your problems with "Translating "RouterC_TermServ"--if you ook in your config file you'll likely notice a statement (other than hostname) that references RouterC_TermServ" that appears before your statement "no ip domain-lookup". Possibly in a boot system statement? It's seeing this statement before it recognizes the "no ip domain-lookup" command. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Ash Aslam Sent: December 8, 2000 12:31 AM To: Kevin Wigle; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Cisco Group Study Subject: RE: 2509 start-up message!! Until you upgrade your bootrom to 12.0 (from 11.0) you will always get that message. Or, you could always go back to an 11.?? Hi Ash The message you get is not an error it is just telling you that the config was created by a version 12 and the boot system is a version 11. This is just to let you know that if the image from version 12 is not loaded then all of the commands may no work correctly. With the bootup looking for a hostname have you set the system boot command to look for a tftp server ? have you tryed doing a clear startup and then doing a reload ? RE: 2509 start-up message!! Still not working....
Hi there, I have tried the recommendations made and it still doesn't work. As mentioned previously I get the following error at start-up: > %SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER: Configurations from version 12.0 may not be correctly > under stood. I have tried the "write mem" and "reload" commands after upgrading the image, but no joy!! The registry key is set to 0x2102 which is ok. What is the remedy for the above warning message? Compiled Wed 25-Oct-00 01:49 by cmong Translating "RouterC_TermServ" ==END OF ROUTER OUTPUT DUMP= As you can see on the very last line the IOS is trying to resolve the actual hostname "RouterC_TermServ". The router stops responding at this stage just before it gets to the user level (Router>) prompt. I press the Return/Enter key several times but nothing happens. I found the only way around this is to physically re-boot the router, go into boot mode, change the registry from 0x2102 to 0x2142. Once the image is loaded, I go into privilege mode and change the registry key back to 0x2102. I issue the "no ip domain-lookup" command to stop the Router name from resolving, I then do "write mem", "reload". The router starts to work fine at this stage. But when I physically turn the Router off (or issue a reload command during the small lab exercises I do), it goes back to the same problem of trying to (Translating "RouterC_TermServ") just before it gets to the user level prompt. I have also changed the flash modules to see if that will make any change but still the same problem? Any hints on this issue to save me from going through all this each time I turn the Router on? Ok, Leigh-Anne Chisholm gives a pretty good post in answer to this thread. I'm going to bounce one of my lab routers now and watch it.
