Yes, you can connect using PPP without authentication, which makes perfect sense if you're using it for point-to-point dedicated links. For DDR, do you want just anyone to be able to dial in and connect to your network? Nope! So, for DDR, why not use the authentication? CHAP is pretty effective for basic authentication in DDR networks.
