Not quite true. TCP/IP CAN be done in silicon. However, it's not a good idea to do this. The reason being is that if you have a bug in your stack, you gotta toss the whole card. These are called Layer 3 network cards, and are being used in some cases to speed up some server stuff. Generally, however, I think they're a crock and not worth it. TCP isn't THAT much overhead. Why - It is called software because it is. Explain - Cause you can't carry it in a bag like a piece of hardware.
