Hi Nandit, Answer to this question took me quite a lot of time and research to find out when I first got interested in Cisco and wanted to build a home lab for practice. I don't believe there is a right or wrong way in building a lab at home for practice as there is quite a selection of Cisco hardware to choose from. It all depends on how much you want to spend. Of course the more you spend the better your lab will be. My personal opinion is that the most important thing in building a home lab (especially for CCIE level) is the selection (variety) of interfaces on the routers and not really what router types you have (unless of course your going for better performance, i.e. faster routers, modularity, etc). I would say that for CCNA having three routers to practice on is a bonus. 2500 Series and above would be ideal. For CCNP having 4 Routers and a Catalyst switch would be great. One of the Router's should have at least 4 Serial interfaces for Frame Relay Switch set-up, BGP Route Reflectors, etc. Switch type could be any but more generally used for home practice are the Cisco Catalyst 2901 or Cat. 5000 Switches. I am currently in the process of building the following CCIE lab at home for practice. I have: Catalyst 2901 Switch -12 port 10/100 Ethernet module - Software 4.5(9). -Supervisor I engine - Software 4.5(9). Cisco 2924XL Enterprise Switch. Cisco 2502 (16MB/16MB) (2 Serial, 1 Token Ring) Cisco 2503 (16MB/16MB) (2 Serial, 1 Ethernet, 1 ISDN) Cisco 2509 (16MB/16MB) (2 Serial, 8 Async, 1 Ethernet) Cisco 4500 (8MB/32MB) -Dual port serial module (NP-4T) -Dual port Ethernet module (NP-2E) -Dual port token ring module (NP-2R) I will be getting: Cisco 2513 (16MB/16MB) (2 Serial, 1 Ethernet, 1 Token Ring) Cisco 2522 (16MB/16MB) (8 Serial, 1 Ethernet, 1 ISDN) Cisco 2610 with 1 x VoIP module Cisco 2620 with 1 x VoIP module (Used for ISL/Trunking) ISDN Simulator. This is by no means a perfect (dream!!) lab and is based on my own research. You probably will have noticed I do not have any ATM gear as this is a bit pricey and I will be hiring some time on ccbootcamp, etc...closer to the actual CCIE lab. Hope this helps!! Is there anything like a dream lab ? Maybe it exists in dreams only! I'd want all the routers, switches, hosts (Unix, Mac, NT/2000, Novell, SNA), PIX, access-servers, et al I can get! There's no right answer for a dream lab - it's going to be different things for different people. Check out home lab scenarios on CCPrep.com - excellent resource. Hey everyone, Don't forget the satellite uplinks to test that pesky delay! On a serious note, do many of you have non-Cisco layer 2 or above devices in your labs, other than servers/hosts? I realize this wouldn't help too much with specific Cisco certification, but I imagine would be potentially invaluable for real-world multi-vendor situations. I got my hands on a cheap 3Com LanModem to play with RIP interoperability (doesn't do much else, SFAIK) and I can use it for testing dial-backup. Other than that, I play with Checkpoint FW-1 (primarily NT with a little Solaris added in) but have yet to test with my 2600 CSIS.
