Re: CLNS and ISIS in R&S Lab??? [7:21557]

2001-10-01 Thread Peter Van Oene

Although your correct that routers in an ISIS domain require a valid Network
Entity Title (NET), the point about using CLNS PDU's is inaccurate, though I
admit widely misunderstood. ISIS packets are actually directly encapsulated
at layer two and thus do not use the services of any protocol at Layer 3,
CLNP or otherwise. There has been and likely still is, and probably will
continue to be, lots of talk about encapsulating ISIS PDU's in IP, but CLNP
encapsulation has never been a reality or a goal as far as I can tell. So,
to answer your question, there really are no dependencies and until the
folks in the CCIE lab program pull ISIS from the blueprint, you'll need to
learn it. Since ISIS is actually rising steadily in popularity from a
deployment perspective, I would hazard a guess that it will stay in
existing, and end up in new, exam blueprints for quite some time.

You can fit what I know about IS-IS in a pretty small container but I
Understand that IS-IS communicates using CLNS PDU's and and an IS-IS
router must have and ISO address known as a NET address, etc. so I
thought there were some interdependancies.

Cisco fully supports ISO CLNS however, ISO CLNS has been removed from the
protocols tested on the CCIE Lab. Integrated ISIS is not dependant on CLNS
and thus remains a valid exam topic.
