Re: adding new switch to VTP domain [7:63654]

2003-02-25 Thread Troy Leliard
And if you are even more paranoid like I am, you can ensure that your
original VTP domain is password proteceted, that way if you in "forget" to
"reset" the version counter of your new switch, it wont automatically del
all the existing info. I also tend to alway add new switched as client and
then once they have their vlan iinfo, upgrade them to servers (if this is
eve necessary). I tend to have to core 6500's as servers and then all sub
switches as clients. This way you can also inforce some control of vlan
management :) Especially if the sub switches are "managed" by other
departmetns. IE they look after port assignments and vlan membership, but
the we would look after the over vlan database / vtp prunning etc.

RE your first issue ... I have hot swapped Gbic's on the 4000 platform, and
with the same IOS etc, once it crashed, and the other 4 times it was fine!
So go figure ! Best idea is to do it during a maintenance window if it is
that cricital to bvusiness!

You can clear the config, re-cycle and put it back on the right domain.
Your config rev. should be 0

For the second practice do the following.
1 Clear config all
2 Power cycle the switch
3 If server mode is used make sure the configuration revision number is 0

Subject: adding new switch to VTP domain [7:63654]

Hi All,

Tommorrow I will be adding a new 2950 to my switch fabric. I will add
another GBIC copper module to my 4006. Does any one know if I can just
insert it whilst on ? I remember last time I done this under the old IOS for
the 4006 with the supIII, it had a cow and just died. I have the latest IOS
on the cat 4006 supIII now and I wonder if it will be an issue ?

Also, a gotcha I came across because I do things sometimes to quick (lesson
for learners, dont do stupid things) I added a new switch to my VTP domain,
and lost info such as VLAns and the like. What I tend to do these days, is
the make the switch a client on the VTP domain, before inserting it, change
the vtp domain, add it with the cables, then change the vtp domain info back
but keeping it a a client. Is this good practice ?

Any one know about my first issue ?

John
