Whatsup Gold seems expensive for what it is though. Or at least it was last I heard. There are shareware/freeware packages which come very close. Servers Alive, I used a while ago, which at that time was free for up to ten devices and very cheap for over ten. I tried a load of others at the same time for a specific task. Servers Alive came out on top at the time as it was one of the few that as well as being able to execute a command line on failure of a device (which most of the packages allowed), it also allowed the same on recovery of the device (which a lot of the others did not). It also converted and ran well as a service. Kiwi's Cat Tools very handy too. Don't get me wrong. We run all sorts of management applications which we pay through the nose for (HP NNM, CWSI2000), but there are times when the task fits a cheaper solution, and one that doesn't take a week to install and configure. I like Router IP Console (ric) for about $50. This is for Cisco routers though. Don't know how well it does for other vendor products. Big Brother is a bit much for what most people need. While it is a great tool, and I've setup quite a few BB servers, for basic monitoring its overkill. If you're running it under UNIX, goto http://freshmeat.net and look around. Theres atleast a dozen simple network projects. Also keep in mind BB doesn't use SNMP, you have to add that feature in, so if you plan on expanding into more detailed checkings on your router, you're gonna need to pay a visit to deadcat (yes, the name of the BB extensions/modules site is http://www.deadcat.net) BB is a great tool, its got great features, but if you want something REALLY simple, look around freshmeat.
