*Job Description*
Our client is in the preparation stages of moving to a new data center.
Prior to moving to the new data center, their existing, end of life, SQL
Physical Server environment needs to be upgraded from Microsoft SQL Server
2008 to Microsoft SQL Server 2014 and migrated to a new environment of
virtual machines (VM) on the Nutanix hardware.

Our client is looking to bring in a technical resource for a 12 - 15 week
engagement to perform the following tasks:



1.     Discovery: Gather all the required data and information of the
existing SQL environment to gain an in-depth understanding of the
architecture. Discovery will be collaborative with the engineering
team conducted via stakeholder interviews and technical audits.

   - Document and communicate plan for migrating from physical servers to
   Nutanix environment and list the number of VMs required, CPU, Memory, and
   total Disk storage
   - Document plan for executing the migration of the existing physical SQL
   servers to Nutanix VMs and validate applications will not break.
   - If code change is required to update controls, etc. document clearly.
   - Analyze current memory and processor use trends and make
   recommendations for memory and processor resourcing for new environment.
   - Document process for testing and migrating database instances to new
   SQL Server 2014 Virtual environment, including recommendations for older
   databases and applications that may require upgrading or compatibility
   mode, or will not operate as currently configured in the new environment.

2.     Design: Based on the Discovery, consultant will develop a detailed
design and architecture that will encompass logical and physical design of
the new SQL environment. The following areas will be covered:

   - Partner with Server Administration and Systems Integration Management
   staff to develop and implement final design for new SQL Server 2014
   environment
   - Design new environment based upon VMWare 5.5+ and 6.x and Windows 2012
   R2 platforms, compatible with SQL Server 2014 Standard Version. Environment
   is designed as Always On, Scalable and Highly Elastic, according to
   Microsoft standards
   - Analyze new network host architecture (OS, hardware, anti-virus,
   network scanning, etc.) to determine risks and mitigation needed to
   accommodate new back end architecture
   - Using Microsoft best practices, design a new SQL 2014 Standard Edition
   to support existing SQL database environment (TEST and PRODUCTION
   instances), and the addition of new DEVELOPMENT and EVALUATION instances,
   mirroring the PRODUCTION environment.
   - Per Microsoft best practices, review Microsoft Breaking Changes and
   Behavioral Changes in SQL Server 2014 to identify and mitigate risks to
   migration from our client's existing SQL 2008 environment.
   - Using information from Discovery phase, develop Pre-upgrade Check List
   - Document and test Microsoft best practices queries and procedures to
   be run in new instance to maintain optimal performance and tuning and make
   recommendations for implementation.

3.     Deployment: Implement the Migration plan developed in the design
phase. The deployment will happen in conjunction with Seattle Public
Utilities staff.

   - Work with Operations and Project Management staff to develop project
   plan for implementation, including task, timing, schedule and staff
   assignments
   - Verify that all pre-deployment tasks have been completed and approved.
   - Create supporting documentation detailing logical design, methods,
   procedures as part of knowledge transfer
   - Develop documentation for pre-migration test methods as well as smoke
   testing following migration
   - Design and implement plan for migration of existing databases to SQL
   2014 Test environment and assist in testing

4.     Support: Operation hand-off will occur. As-built documentation and
design specific knowledge transfer will take place.
