[Clamav-users] clamav bigstack docs?

Hash: RIPEMD160

hi all,

could someone kindly point me to any documentation/description about
clamav's --enable-bigstack configure option?

interested in the usual: why/when use it, resource reqt's, etc etc

tho i am digging thru lurker trying (not yet ...) to find its origin,
there's nothing in the v0.88 docs ... :-|

thx!

[Clamav-users] question abt clamd listener choice/performance

2005-09-17 Thread OpenMacNews

hi all,

a general question ...

i've clamd 0.87 running on the same box (OSX 10.4.2) as its caller (currently,
Exim 4.53RC1's Exiscan).

my clamd listener options are:

   (1) clamd local unix socket
   (2) clamd on 127.0.0.1
   (3) clamd on 10.0.0.6 (-- LAN ip)

what's the general reasoning for choosing one over the other? are the
significant performance/security variances among the options?

currently, i simply use (2), under the assumption that 'someday' i may move
clamd to a different box, and changing 'everything' to support (3) should be
relatively easy ...

i'm still slogging through the manual wiki, but have not (yet!) found a
relevant section ...

thoughts/comments?

thx!

richard

2005-07-25 Thread OpenMacNews

hi damian,

thx 4 the reply =)

I haven't seen that, and have confirmed that the DNS TXT record for
current.cvd.clamav.net is correctly set at 0.86.2.

Try running freshclam again and see if you still get the warning. If you do,
check your DNS -- you might be getting stale data. It's possible that your
ISP is caching the DNS record for 24 hours or some other abnormally-long
time. (It's supposed to be cached for 15 minutes.)

well, you may be spot-on.

all's 'suddenly' (a few hours later ...) OK! whic, i suppose, is 'good news'.

sorry for any fire drill ...

nonethless, there seems like there *was* a check which reported a newer version
as too old ...

hi luca,

per your a0.86.2 announcement, i just ul'd installed v0.86.2 on OSX 10.4.2; i

after install, a 'freshclam' results in:

The attached patch will fix.
ok!
i can verify that Masaki's patch (removing the check for resolv.h) does the trick and
allows a successful make with:
   ./configure \
   --prefix=/usr/local/clamav080rc \
   --mandir=/usr/local/man \
   --enable-shared \
   --enable-static \
   --with-user=clamav \

   --with-tcpwrappers \
   --without-libcurl \
   --disable-dns
--with-libcurl still is an issue tho.

freshclam still gives me the security warning.

2004-04-28 Thread OpenMacNews
Apologies for the top post, I've had a long day :(

I've made some progress, running $export SED=sed seems to fix the original
error. However I have another problem. The following error message will
hopefully shed some light on my problems:
snip
/usr/bin/ld: -o: multiply specified
make[2]: *** [libclamav.la] Error 1
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make: *** [all] Error 2
/snip
I can provide the whole thing if required however it's not very small...

Am I missing something obvious here? I should probably specify my system
spec here too:
Running the latest clam av from cvs.
Mac OSX 10.3.2 (server) running on Xserve
Installed gmp-4.1.2 without any problems
However make still won't run correctly. My knowledge is fairly limited here
so unfortunately I'm stuck.
Please help ;-)

Huw Jenkins
Huw,

I think you may be bumping into some version conflicts.

Can you provide the output of the following?

% gcc --version glibtool --version sed --version autoconf --version automake --version

just re-checked,

ScanMail ScanArchive are *both* enabled in clamav.conf

and, ClamAV *is* regularly scanning/catching OTHER email viruses ...

- What is CGpro sending to clamav? Does it decompose mails? CG _may_
fulfill this task, erm, incompletely. Or does it
send the whole raw message to clamav? Then you definitely need to
enable ScanMail (see above)

i'm not sure i understand enuf to answer your question adequately,
however you should know that ...
CGPro is doing NONE of the av processing, nor is it, itself, speaking
'directly' to ClamAV
rather, ClamAV is being invoked by a CGPro script, cgpav-1.3a, found

compiled in the presence of a successful clamav build/install.

seems like there's a bunch o' questions abt this ...

is there anything we (users) can do abt this issue? is it, rather, a
developer issue? or is it *not* a clamav issue at all, but the calling

This _seems_ like a development issue, as I wrote you in private already. It seems
like an endianess issue at first
glance (most development is done on i386, where the byte order is different than on
PowerPC), but I'll definitely
have a look at it, at latest this weekend. I just have to get my G4 working and a
couple of small jobs done before.
hi all,

has this endian-ness issue been addressed? or somehow otherwise resolved?

if so, i missed it ... and appreciate any pointers!

Worm.SomeFool.Gen-1 is our name. How does McAffee call it ? Is that
really ClamAV missing that worms ?
well that's a very interesting point ...

so, i checked my clamd.log, only to find:

which means to me cgpav *is* processing the messages, and per your comment abt the name, it IS ClamAV that's catching
them ...

yet, i'm receiving notices FROM my *mcafee* filter that *IT* is catching them ... and the message refers the
Worm.SomeFool.* that you say is ClamAV's name.

the only way that can happen is if the cgpav+clamav+CGPro combination does NOT discard the virus-containing-message in
the first place, and passes it on for further processing ...

so, i'm a bit confused at the moment!

maybe wires are getting crossed somehow? doesn't make much sense to me, but i'll reboot and watch for awhile ...

[Clamav-users] all this complaining about 0.65 vs CVS ...

2004-02-10 Thread OpenMacNews
i'm noticing a lot of displeasure with 0.65 not doing this, that or the other ...

in my experience and opinion, this list -- and the great team and product behind it -- is one of the most
active/responsive opensource products that i've seen

changes/updates/fixes are **regularly** integrated into the cvs release ... which, with RARE exception is stable and
production quality. from ME to the team -- THANK YOU ! for all your hard/great work!

these changes/updates frequently come FASTER MORE FREQUENTLY than some of the commercial program updates! IMHO,
these folks are managing a minor miracle!

bottom line, clamav is STILL a 1.0 release. if you're going to use it in a production environment, AND want all the
latest/greatest features then DL cvs, build it and use it ... daily, if you have to.

if that's too much effort, or not-acceptable for your production env, then should you be using a pre-release product in
the first place.

maybe its just me and/or the recent spate of posts, but a little less-complaining, and a few more THANK YOU's to the
team would be a nice change

just one man's opinion.

[Clamav-users] thinking-out-loud: submitting CLAMAV as an Apache Incubator Project?

2004-02-03 Thread OpenMacNews
hi all,

There are a few OSS projects that, IMHO, are becoming important technologies in the mail/virus/spam world.

Of particular note in my small little world is SpamAssassin. Huge following, great reputation, integration everywhere
I look.
Apparently, its popular enuf that its being incubated at the Apache Software Foundation for eventual/possible inclusion
as a top-level Apache Project:

cref:
   http://www.spamassassin.org/index.html
SpamAssassin lives at http://spamassassin.org/ or in CPAN, and is
distributed under Perl's Artistic
license. ('SpamAssassin' is a trademark of Network Associates, Inc.)
This is changing, however. SpamAssassin is in the process of becoming
an Apache Software Foundation
top-level project. As a result, our license will be changing with
SpamAssassin 2.70; from that
version on we will be using the Apache Software License. We are
currently undergoing incubation at the
ASF. In the meantime, the project has yet to be fully endorsed by the
ASF.
and,
   http://incubator.apache.org/
CLAMAV is quickly becoming a next key technology ... everywhere I look I read sysadmins' tales of CLAMAV
integration/inclusion in their environments.

would it be of interest/value to the community, and probably most importantly to Thomas Kojm, the rest of the team,
to seek such similar integration/promotion via the Apache project?

i'm certain that there are license issues (GPL vs BSD vs Apache vs etc, etc), but have no sense as to whether they'd be
deal breakers ...

any thoughts/comments/ideas?

just thinkin' ...

[Clamav-users] help? clamav dynamic library WARNINGS on MacOSX 10.3.1

2003-12-12 Thread OpenMacNews
hi all,

the 'bugs' folks suggested i post this here for a Mac expert

richard

hi,

clamav-devel builds ok on MacOSX 10.3.1

config as follows:

cvs -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/clamav co clamav-devel
pull @12/11/03 12:24:50
cd /usr/ports/clamav-devel

./configure \
--prefix=/usr/local/clamav \
--enable-shared \
--disable-static \
--with-user=clamav \
--with-group=clamav
make completes, but has the following 'warnings' ... the libs referred to definitely exist in .dylib form.

i'm not at all certain why clamav isn't finding them :-S

thoughts/questions/suggestions?

thx,

richard
