[Clamav-users] question abt clamd listener choice/performance
hi all, a general question ... i've clamd 0.87 running on the same box (OSX 10.4.2) as its caller (currently, Exim 4.53RC1's Exiscan). my clamd listener options are: (1) clamd local unix socket (2) clamd on 127.0.0.1 (3) clamd on 10.0.0.6 (-- LAN ip) what's the general reasoning for choosing one over the other? are the significant performance/security variances among the options? currently, i simply use (2), under the assumption that 'someday' i may move clamd to a different box, and changing 'everything' to support (3) should be relatively easy ... i'm still slogging through the manual wiki, but have not (yet!) found a relevant section ... thoughts/comments? thx! richard pgpBIp2KPCxnW.pgp Description: PGP signature ___ http://lurker.clamav.net/list/clamav-users.html

hi damian, thx 4 the reply =) I haven't seen that, and have confirmed that the DNS TXT record for current.cvd.clamav.net is correctly set at 0.86.2. Try running freshclam again and see if you still get the warning. If you do, check your DNS -- you might be getting stale data. It's possible that your ISP is caching the DNS record for 24 hours or some other abnormally-long time. (It's supposed to be cached for 15 minutes.) well, you may be spot-on. all's 'suddenly' (a few hours later ...) [Clamav-users] all this complaining about 0.65 vs CVS ...
i'm noticing a lot of displeasure with 0.65 not doing this, that or the other ... in my experience and opinion, this list -- and the great team and product behind it -- is one of the most active/responsive opensource products that i've seen changes/updates/fixes are **regularly** integrated into the cvs release ... which, with RARE exception is stable and production quality. from ME to the team -- THANK YOU ! for all your hard/great work! these changes/updates frequently come FASTER MORE FREQUENTLY than some of the commercial program updates! IMHO, these folks are managing a minor miracle! bottom line, clamav is STILL a 1.0 release. if you're going to use it in a production environment, AND want all the latest/greatest features then DL cvs, build it and use it ... daily, if you have to. if that's too much effort, or not-acceptable for your production env, then should you be using a pre-release product in the first place. maybe its just me and/or the recent spate of posts, but a little less-complaining, and a few more THANK YOU's to the team would be a nice change just one man's opinion. --- The SF.Net email is sponsored by EclipseCon 2004 Premiere Conference on Open Tools Development and Integration See the breadth of Eclipse activity. [Clamav-users] thinking-out-loud: submitting CLAMAV as an Apache Incubator Project?
hi all, There are a few OSS projects that, IMHO, are becoming important technologies in the mail/virus/spam world. Of particular note in my small little world is SpamAssassin. Huge following, great reputation, integration everywhere I look. Apparently, its popular enuf that its being incubated at the Apache Software Foundation for eventual/possible inclusion as a top-level Apache Project: cref: http://www.spamassassin.org/index.html SpamAssassin lives at http://spamassassin.org/ or in CPAN, and is distributed under Perl's Artistic license. ('SpamAssassin' is a trademark of Network Associates, Inc.) This is changing, however. SpamAssassin is in the process of becoming an Apache Software Foundation top-level project. As a result, our license will be changing with SpamAssassin 2.70; from that version on we will be using the Apache Software License. We are currently undergoing incubation at the ASF. In the meantime, the project has yet to be fully endorsed by the ASF. and, http://incubator.apache.org/ CLAMAV is quickly becoming a next key technology ... everywhere I look I read sysadmins' tales of CLAMAV integration/inclusion in their environments. would it be of interest/value to the community, and probably most importantly to Thomas Kojm, the rest of the team, to seek such similar integration/promotion via the Apache project? i'm certain that there are license issues (GPL vs BSD vs Apache vs etc, etc), but have no sense as to whether they'd be deal breakers ... any thoughts/comments/ideas? just thinkin' ... --- The SF.Net email is sponsored by EclipseCon 2004 Premiere Conference on Open Tools Development and Integration See the breadth of Eclipse activity.
