According to the Declude mailing list, there are many people using clamd
on Windows. The performance is much better. I don't have the email volume
at the moment to warrant the additional complexity so I just use clamscan.

I have experimented with clamd / clamdscan and they worked for me. Someone
on that list posted a monitor for clamd I assume because it was dying
occasionally for them. I never had that problem in my limited testing.

I don't update the snapshot I'm using every day but I try and keep
reasonably
current. I'm running freshclam every 4 hours.

Declude Virus Pro can run multiple virus scanners. I added ClamAV to my
list because of its reputation of rapid database updates for new viruses.
It has been first to catch a couple of times since I started using it.

There are some issues around getting Declude to parse the output of ClamAV
and capture the virus name, but I've fixed those first with a perl program I
wrote and more recently with a compiled program written by the same person
that wrote the monitor.

If you'd like more input, I'm sure you would get plenty if you asked on the
Declude Virus mailing list.

Brad Morgan

WOW. Is it stable? How are you using it, with clamd or clamscan?

The server runs Ipswitch's IMail with Declude Virus
and Declude JunkMail addons.

AFAIK Declude runs command line scanner (e.g. clamscan),
which means your system should be OK as long as you virus db
is up to date.
I'd like to know user's experience with clamd on Windows though.

I'm running ClamAV on a PRODUCTION Windows email server using the snapshots
that Fajar provides. The server runs Ipswitch's IMail with Declude Virus
and Declude JunkMail addons.

Thanks, I will give it a try.

I don't know how to install (read : compile) ClamAV natively to Windows
(using MS-VC or Borland CPP). If you know how, that would be great.
Just make sure you use the latest ClamAV version.
Otherwise, compiling ClamAV on cygwin should work.
Latest CVS snapshot version (devel-20040429) compiles OK on cygwin.
My binary is at http://clamav.or.id/snapshot.
Some changes might be required on clamav.conf, but otherwise
it should run on any W2k/WinXP.

Yes, I am already using clamav-milter.

The Windows server has cyswin installed as well.
Should I install ClamAV natively to windows or to cygwin?

I love to do it but we require a Windows server.
It's the only server in our LAN

If you use clamav-milter, the answer is yes.
If you use other "glues" (e.g. mail-scanner, amavis, etc.) that depends
on the glue.
Try man clamav-milter, then use
--server=HOSTNAME/ADDRESS

However, that would result in high amount of data transfer on your LAN
during message scanning. Other than that, I don't know anybody who
actually runs ClamAV on Windows (with cygwin, usually)
for mail scanning on PRODUCTION servers.
I would recommend formatting your Windows
Server and put Fedora on it :)
