If you launch swank with 'lein swank', there is probably an option. lein is just a shell-script which calls the following at the end: exec $RLWRAP $JAVA_CMD -Xbootclasspath/a:"$CLOJURE_JAR" -client $JAVA_OPTS \ -cp "$CLASSPATH" -Dleiningen.version="$VERSION" $JLINE \ clojure.main -e "(use 'leiningen.core)(-main)" $NULL_DEVICE $@ A quick test on my machine showed that changing the environment variable JAVA_OPTS can be used to pass arguments to the java vm.
