Hi Doris-bmt, According to web-md a rare side effect of Gleevec is Retinal Hemorrhage as well as Eye Bleeds. Although I have never been on it, I had a bone marrow transplant almost 23 years ago, I have heard of this happening many times with people taking Gleevec. It usually subsides in a short time with no permement eye damage. What you have here is a trade off. You may have some side effects but your still alive to have these side effects. As long as your getting out of bed every morning and doing what you do then your doing well. You being on Gleevec for the past eleven years proves it. If Gleevec were available when I had CML I would have opted for it rather then having that bone marrow transplant. Not to say that there may be certain people that will need a BMT because it all depends on their circumstances. [CMLHope] High blood pressure
Hi, my name is Doris I don't get on that much but I read often. I'm having trouble with my blood pressure. On gleevec 100mg six a day. Been in remission since 2002. Now my blood pressure out of control. Dr just up my lisinopril to 10mg twice a day with a water pill. The lowest its been so far is156/84.I get dizzy. Light headed and racing heart rate. I totally. Feel weird. And can tell when it spikes. Hey Doris,I've been fighting high blood pressure the last couple of years - due to medications of course!I can't take the most common medications for BP and the ones I can haven't been totally effective. So since I don't smoke and I'm not overweight I decided I would do a food log. That is record everything I ate or drank and see how much sodium I was consuming. Short version - I started my log one day and entered what I had for breakfast and lunch - looking up sodium content on either packaging or the internet. I was WAY over the daily maximum -of 2300 mg (for healthy people, it's 1500 mg for people with hypertension) at lunch! Just recording everything made me couscous enough of sodium that I was below 2000 mg by day 2. And my BP immediately went down to normal. The mechanism is simple. Excess sodium in the blood binds water that should be eliminated and the increased volume increases blood pressure. My first surprise was the Whataburger's grilled chicken has 3 times the sodium of their fried Whatachicken. They post calories in the store. One more thought. They always list sodium, calories and everything else by SERVING on nutrition panels. So you have to note how many servings they claim are in the package. I picked up a small bag of nuts that had low sodium (and calories) claim on the front of the package - per serving of course. Servings per package - SIX! yeah right I'll invite 5 people over and pass around a small bag of nuts. Hi MartyGood to see you on line. I am hoping you are okay these days. I just came off of two months of Home Care, but really need to work on building my strength again. I will get there. I think that every day I get a bit back. I just don't ever give up, but then that's me. I thank God for each day I have. It is really cold in PA. It has been below zero at night and not that warm during the dayaround 15 to 20. I think we'll be getting a little snow tomorrow, but that means it will warm up some. I'm ready for Spring.
