RE: [cms-list] cms-list archives?

2002-11-01 Thread Brendan Quinn
Rex, and list,

Something is wrong with the email archiving system, Phil is working on it I
believe.

Of course he's a busy man, so in the meantime I signed the list up to the
mail-archive.com service.

This means that all posts from about a week ago are available at
http://www.mail-archive.com/cms-list@;cms-list.org/

Apparently you can upload old emails to the list to populate the archive...
if anyone has the appropriate combination of old messages, skills, time and
inclination they can check out http://www.mail-archive.com/faq.html and try
to add some history.

I hope I'm not violating anyone's privacy here, it doesn't seem to preserve
email addresses from headers but it does keep them if they're in your email
signatures.

Only trying to help :-)

Brendan.

Of course you are.

You're putting all of our email addresses on the web for spambots.

Think before doing things like this.

And perhaps I should have been explicit in requesting that you immediately
unsubscribe this list from that service and request that they take down any
email already archived on there.

2002-11-01 Thread Cameron Barrett
Darrel and list,

I have already sent an off-list email to Brendan explaining to him the
problems he is creating by signing the cms-list up to mail-archive.com
service.

I ask everyone to think strongly about the ramifications of their actions
when doing something like this for an online community. When in doubt, ask
the list-moms first. We've already been through this several times and could
have avoided all of these problems.

We understand that Brendan is just trying to help. No fault in that, but
please ask us before you take action.

Phil is very busy and will get around to fixing the list archives hosted on
his server when he can. Please be patient.

Thanks for understanding,

Cameron Barrett and Phil Suh, List-Moms

Not that this excuses any action like this taken by someone not
responsible for the list administration, but it did look to me like
the archive wasn't exposing email addresses in a machine-readable
way - even in the message bodies, the @ sign was replaced by an
image.

So is it still being archived there at mail-archive?

It should be safe from spambots since.
