Re: Stus-List Starting a Universal

2013-07-27 Thread Martin DeYoung
Dave,

Calypso has a different engine but does have a 3 blade MAX prop. We just
finished a haul out.

When the bottom was pressure washed and I was turning the prop (and shaft) to
inspect it the worn out cutlass (prop shaft) bearing failed in a way that was
jamming the shaft.

Bits of the rubber part of the cutlass bearing were peeling off and rolling up.

A test without SCUBA gear would be to rotate the shaft from inside. With the
engine off and the reduction gear in neutral the shaft should rotate by hand.

After we replaced Calypso's cutlass bearing and re-aligned the engine/shaft I
was easily able to rotate it with one hand.

If you are new to MAX props check out the PYI Inc. web site for maintenance
information, or ask a follow up question.

Seemed fine in neutral. Why would you get black smoke from a fouled prop or is
just because the engine is trying to drive the prop and cannot due to the
fouling. I forgot to mention that when I put it in reverse, the engine stalled
twice. Max-prop feathering 3 blade. Dave

2013-07-27 Thread Chuck S
I must say that I have the same engine and when I realized I never got the proper RPMs, I checked the main shaft with a tachometer and found my tach was reading half the RPMs.  I made a change on a selector on the Tach to get it closer to actual RPMs. 1)  Loose Belt?  The indicated RPM is generated by the alternator.  The engine may be running fine while a loose belt will indicate low RPMs.  If the engine runs and no RPMs indicated, the belt is broke.  Check the belt to be sure it is tight.  The sheaves are pretty close so no more than a belt width of flex is acceptable.  Make sure the sheaves themselves are clean, no slippery surface.   2) Throttle lever blocked?  With the engine stopped, check the throttle lever at the engine for full movement.  It is remotely possible that something is jambing the lever.  Look along the starboard side front of engine, above the water pump, for a lever with a control cable attached.   You should be able to move the lever fairly easily.   Next, start the engine and operate the throttle lever manually and increase speed from idle to full speed.  ChuckResolute1990 C&C 34RAtlantic City, NJFrom: "David Knecht" To: "CnC CnC discussion list" Sent: Saturday, July 27, 2013 10:14:41 PMSubject: Re: Stus-List Starting a UniversalThe saga continues and I am once again in need of advice from the group. Dirty bottom or prop adds drag and overloads the engine.

I have loops at the end of the jib sheets with a soft shackle mating the jib

Better than the hard snap shackle with bowline knots being tossed around by the

Sam,

Some use a single soft shackle much like you use your midpoint loop. The
problem with that is changing sails. We do a few offshore races. We need to

Thanks. My panels are opaque. Grabbed an LED light from Worst Marine. Will
install with a white trim ring.

2013-07-27 Thread Steve Thomas

Dennis,

If your winch access panel is white translucent plastic, like mine, you could
just wire an LED array up inside and let it shine down through the panel. I
know a guy who made his own using a piece of perf board when packaged lights
were harder to get. I thought it looked good. There was no evidence of a light
being there until you turned it on.

These ones look interesting, which appear to have proper drivers and are not
expensive. What I bought was just an array of LEDs wired series parallel, but
it worked fine in the nasty old and yellowed plastic fixtures on my 27.

Stus-List 35-1 galley down light

2013-07-27 Thread Dennis C.
Started a new project today.

Ken's pics of his really nice overhead down lights got me thinking. The galley
light in the 35-1 is tucked under the deck so it doesn't provide much light for
the sink.

Directly above the sink is a winch access panel. Would it be possible to mount
a down light in the panel?

Two questions immediately popped up. First, can I get a wire in there? Second,
can I find a light that will fit the shallow space?

I've answered the first question. After several attempts, I managed to fish a
messenger string into the space. A fish tape wouldn't work. I worked a coat

If there is enough length to the Edson 6" hex head, and enough diameter on the
head, it would be an easy job for a machine shop to turn it into a countersunk
flat head bolt.
Or a half decent machine shop could turn one from raw stock...

Surprised Edson didn't offer a replacement of some kind.
Are you sure you need flatheat? Our pedestal bolts are 1/2" hex head and 6"

  Help

I was working on my pedestal this past weekend and one of the aluminum bolts
only loosened about 1 1/2 turns then seized. All I could do was drill it out.
Now I’m having difficulty finding a replacement. I called Edson and they
advised me that they no longer carry the 6” bolt. Thanks C&C for making an
extra heavy cockpit sole.

So does anyone know where I can source a flat head 1/2” X 6” (5” would work)
aluminum bolt. If a pinch I would use a stainless.

  Thanks

This spring I have assembled a Web Site on Arpeggio, a 1984 C&C 32 that covers
many aspects of the boat and upgrades and cruises that I have made since it’s

I did this instead of commissioning Arpeggio and sailing this season due to a
shoulder operation and necessary recovery which is going very well. Web site
follows: (nothing fancy) http://arpeggio1984.info

Thanks to Tom Anderson for pictures and suggestion for Garhauer solid vang and
Harken traveler upgrades, which were major improvements.

Contacts can be made on or off the list. See contact section.
